Gar-Pal comedy

slated May 8-9

Garfield-Palouse High School Drama Club will present “The Ransom of Miss Elverna Dower” Thursday and Friday, May 8 and 9, at 7p.m. on the cafeteria stage at Garfield Middle School.

The story comedy is based on “The Ransom of Red Chief,” by O. Henry which was first published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1907. Ticket prices are $6 for adults, $4 senior citizens, students and children.

Blood drive at Palouse

An American Red Cross blood drive will be today, April 17, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Palouse Community Center. Call Nancy Wolf for more information.

AARP driver course set at Colfax May 6

An eight-hour AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver class (formerly known as 55 Alive) will be May 6 in the first floor auditorium of the Whitman County Public Service building at 310 N. Main St, Colfax. Hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a one-hour break for lunch. Parking is available in the lot behind the building. Space is limited and pre-registration is strongly recommended. Course fees are $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.

Designed especially for people age 50 and older the course is open to individuals of any age. Those who complete of the class could be entitled to a reduction in auto insurance premiums.

Athenaeum

Club members will meet April 18 at Peace Lutheran Church for the annual guest day. Patti Cammack will present a program about local history.

FCCLA

Colfax High School FCCLA chapter attended a state leadership conference in Wenatchee March 25-28. Members competed in STAR Events, presented workshops, listened to speakers and learned about community service opportunities, leadership skills and new projects.

Kim Hinnenkamp, state vice president from Colfax, organized, planned and presided over portions of the meeting.

The Colfax parliamentary procedure team of Heather Robinson, Ali Shirley, Doug Wall, Tim Nellis and Nicole Wiley earned a silver medal.

Pearl Griffiths brought home a gold medal with her presentation on the chapter amenity bags service project.

Lizzy May competed with her project “Choose Hope-Give Hope” dealing with teenage suicide and depression. Lizzy placed at the top of her category and was named “National Representative” to move on to the National Leadership Conference.

Ysabeaux Ng was elected to the office of state director of public relations and will attend National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas, in July.

Hinnenkamp, Ng, Shirley and Robinson were each recognized for their completion of five individual leadership projects called “Power of One,” according to Cathy White, chapter advisor.

A daughter, Piper Lynn, was born to Andrew and Jodi Kolb of Temecula, Calif., April 5, 2014, weighing seven pounds, eight ounces. Grandparents are Don and Audrey Kolb of St. John and Jay and Janet Smith of Sprague. Maternal great-grandmothers are Lorna Schiehe, Spangle, and Jeannie Smith, Sprague. The baby joins a brother, Samuel, 5, and sister, Holly, 3.
