Wise Healthcare Consumer Month

February is National Wise Healthcare Consumer Month. While health care costs have slowed their growth in the last few years, they are still very high, driven partly by consumer choices. Almost 23 percent of all doctor visits and 55 percent of all emergency room visits could be avoided if people took better care of themselves and were better consumers of medical services.

Being a wise consumer begins with knowing what you want in a medical provider and seeking out someone who you are compatible with. You should understand your health plan and ask if your medical provider is covered under that plan. It is also important to understand your health plan – co-pays, deductibles and care settings. For example, the emergency department (ED) often has a hefty co-pay to incentives plan members to see the provider in the clinic prior to going to the ED. Because the ED is fully staffed and equipped for any emergency, the cost of care is much higher than being seen in a provider’s office.

Be sure to ask questions of your medical provider or pharmacist so you understand your treatment and how to take your medications. Keep a list of all medications you are taking and carry it with you. Include the name, dose, and how often you take the medication.

It is also a good idea to be familiar with screening exams and adhere to the recommended guidelines for tests such as mammogram and colonoscopy. Being a good consumer also means practicing a healthy lifestyle which includes regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, healthy eating habits, social support and adequate sleep.
