St. John gears up for sprint boat races

St. John

St. John is gearing up for this weekend, with an estimated 3,500 to 5,000 people coming to watch the US sprint boats. Starting today, campers will arrive to locate next to Webb’s Slough.

Friday starting at 5 p.m., the sprint boats and their owners will line the street of downtown St. John so residents can get a close-up look at the boats, meet the racers and take photos.

This is a free event. The Rialto will offer hamburgers and hot dogs on the street, and inside they will serve a full menu.

Most businesses such as Empire Foods, T.O.G., Welcome Home, St. John Pharmacy, Webbs slough store and Funky Junk will all be open until 7 p.m., with all of them having race specials. A free shuttle from the slough to downtown will start at 10 a.m. Friday morning and run until everyone is back to their destination. Tickets can be bought at the gate or on the web: http://www.webbslough.com.

June 14 is the four-man golf “Slough Slam Scramble” with $25 per person sign up starting at 10 a.m. Play will be at 11 a.m. A hot dog lunch will follow at the club house.

St. John swim pool opened Monday, June 10. Swim times are as follows: 1 to 2 p.m. lap swim, 2 to 5 p.m. public swim, 5 to 6 p.m. swim team, 6 to 7 p.m. lap swim, 7 to 9 p.m. public swim. Sunday’s hours are 2-5:30 p.m. for public swim.

Patty Leifer recently returned from a visit with Jeff, Susan, Adeline, Max and Gus in Huntley, Ill. While there she enjoyed four baseball games, lots of practices, shopping, a trip to an amusement park, sleep-overs, yard sales and playing with the grandchildren.
