Tekoa basketball court nets donation

Tekoa High School senior Alex Overton received $5,000 last week in “Impact Funds” from Wilbur-Ellis branch manager Bob Gardner. The funds will help Overton to complete Nighthawk Court, an outdoor basketball court which is her senior project. Impact funds are awarded by Wilbur-Ellis quarterly to community projects nationwide.

Construction of the court is planned for June, to be ready to play by Slippery Gulch Days.

Overton, a senior on the Tekoa-Oakesdale basketball team, has raised $12,000 for the project from various individual donations as well as pledges for medallions to be displayed at the court. Much equipment has been donated for use and land is now leveled with gravel set to be spread.

The court is at the Gymkanna ground adjacent to Highway 27 at the north end of town.

Overton’s basketball team is playing in a state regional playoff game in Walla Walla on Friday vs. Sunnyside Christian.
