Vlieger returns to base

Army Staff Sgt. John E. Vlieger has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Vlieger is a fire control sergeant assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The staff sergeant is a 2006 graduate of Colfax High School.

Johanson on EOU roll

Kalvin Johanson of Pullman was among 549 students at Eastern Oregon University named to the dean’s list for the 2012 fall term. To qualify, students must achieve and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework for the duration of the term.

Earn Gonzaga honor

Gonzaga University students from this area who qualificd for the president’s list with grade averages of 3.7 or higher during fall semester included Zacharia Barnes, Gavin Ormond and Carson Schneider, all of Pullman; Emily Foreyt, Colfax; Kelly and Mason Van Lith, St. John.

NNU lists locals

Brent Conrad and Kelli Largent, both Colfax, were among 414 students named to the dean’s list at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, for fall semester. To be eligible students must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average while taking a minimum of 12 graded credit hours.

Soup social set at museum

Oakesdale Historical Society, sponsor of the McCoy Valley Museum, will have their February Soup Social Sunday, Feb. 17, at the museum from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will have two kinds of soup with bread and dessert.

The museum is raising money for a new furnace since the archival donations need to have an even temperature in all kinds of weather.

Society dues are $10 a year.

Admission to the soup social will be by donation.

Voters league sets brown bag session

Pullman League of Women Voters will have a brown bag meeting next Thursday, Feb. 21, from 12:10 to 1:10 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church on Campus Avenue.

County Auditor Eunice Coker will report on 2012 elections and registration efforts.

Parking is available in the lot beside the church at the corner of Campus and Opal streets.

CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Athenaeum

Members met Feb. 3 at the Whitman County Library with 18 members present. Mary Ann Wigen opened the meeting and a new member was welcomed. All members present listened as the “pledge” was given.

Current events for February were presented by Mary Ann Mitchell. She reported on the upcoming Super Bowl ads and their cost and also very interesting comments on scams used with ATMs.

Following the meeting a most enjoyable program was given by Lois Scholz. It covered the life of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and all of the charities she has worked with. Of special note is her organization of the Special Olympics. Lois included colorful additions regarding other Kennedy family members.

As hostess, Mary Ann Mitchell offered a beautiful Valentine decorated table with a variety of cookies and fruit.

Our next meeting will be on Feb. 15 at the Whitman County library meeting room.

P.E.O.

P.E.O. Chapter AF met Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church. Queenie Leinweber hosted with a Valentine theme. Fifteen members responded to roll call by stating their place of birth.

An invitation from the Spokane Reciprocity was read regarding their spring luncheon on March 16. Replies are requested by March 8.

The following committees were activated by President Liane Smith: Education (scholarship), Nominating (new officers) and the 2013-2014 Yearbook.

A substitute program was given by Liane Smith who just recently returned from a trip to Thailand. She shared her experiences of sights and foods and more.

The next meeting will be Feb. 25 at the home of Dana Carroll, with Dana as hostess. Liane Smith will read her President’s Letter.
