Moose baby spotted

Colfax moose spotters April 26 revived belief of a suspected moose birth in the south hill area of Colfax. A newborn moose has been spotted in the area just south of Colfax by Terry Weitz. The newborn is suspected to have been born to a moose who has been observed at several locations in the south area of town. Residents who observed that moose believe it was a pregnant female.

Saturday morning, residents in the Upper A Street area observed a young moose leaving town via the former UP tracks on the South side of the S. Fork of the Palouse river. That moose appeared to be a yearling. Later, a mature moose, believed to be the mother of the yearling, was seen leaving down on the S. Palouse River Road.

Residents on S. Mill report they spotted the pregnant moose Saturday morning. Weitz, who resides on S. Mill, said he spotted the moose April 23 in the area south of town while driving down Thorn Street. He stopped and used his binoculars to also see a baby moose which still appeared to be wobbly.

Residents are reminded to allow the mama moose and the newborn their privacy. The new mother is expected to be in a protective mode, and people and pets should stay away.
