Library adds 'Livemocha'

Whitman County Library announces the addition of Livemocha to a growing list of products available from the library’s website. Livemocha provides unlimited access to coursework in 38 languages including English as a second language. Livemocha is found at the Electronic Resource link of the library website and is available to all Whitman County Library cardholders. In addition, teen librarian Chelsea Leachman will introduce the product to secondary teachers and students beginning in January.

Library staff researched a number of language programs before selecting Livemocha. While it features traditional coursework like vocabulary instruction, games, flashcards, exams, video role-play and language coaches, Livemocha had an additional component. Livemocha incorporates a social network for its learners, allowing them to interact with, and learn from, more than 10 million native speakers from around the world. This is the world’s largest language “learning” community where participants can chat, make friends and further explore new cultures.

The addition of Livemocha follows on the heels of another advance in library services, the ability to download eBooks from library websites to Kindle readers. Those who own Kindles, or another type of eReader, or audio book player can select the Downloadable Books link in the center of the website for access to a growing catalog of titles.
