St. John 4H, FFA

plan chili feed, auction

St. John Endicott 4H and FFA will host a chili feed and silent auction to raise funds for the community fair and support fund Oct. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the St. John Community Building. This event is hosted to replenish exhibit funds lost from the state fair system.

The dinner will include chili, cinnamon roll, salad and a drink for $6.

Smithsonian Exhibit needs volunteer hosts

The Smithsonian Journey Stories Exhibit will be in St. John Oct. 23 through Dec. 4. Volunteer hosts are needed. Call the library or city hall for more information and to volunteer. Training will be provided. Sign-up early and pick your schedule.

Tour guides, program assistants and other volunteer opportunities are also available. The final schedule of events can be picked up at city hall or from historical society members. St. John Historical Society thanks everyone who shared their textile treasures with the community as a part of Fall in Love with St. John Day. Be sure to look in the museum windows and watch the progress that a dedicated group of volunteers is making. Membership forms are available at the City Hall.

Grimm to

perform

at Dahmen Barn

Tim Grimm, an award-winning songwriter and actor who left Hollywood in the late 1990s to live on an 80 acre farm close to where he grew up in southern Indiana, will perform at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Sunday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. Grimm co-starred for two seasons in the NBC drama, Reasonable Doubts, and in several films. Admission will be $10 at the door.

The League of Women Voters, Whitman County Gazette and the library will sponsor a voter forum Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. Ballot candidates for Colfax Mayor, Colfax School Board and Whitman Port Commissioner have been invited to participate.

Learn about Whitman County’s participation in an $84 million broadband infrastructure project during the Colfax Chamber luncheon Tuesday, Oct. 18. Registration is required by Oct. 14.

Teens are invited to “Picture It @ Your Library” Oct. 16-22 as part of Teen Read Week. This year’s theme encourages teens to read graphic novels and other illustrated materials, seek out creative books or imagine the world through literature, just for the fun of it. More information can be found at the library’s web site.

Youths in grades 1-4 are invited to hands on “Science Fun” with new Teen Librarian Chelsea Leachman Thursday, Oct. 20, 3:30 to 4:30 at the Colfax Library.

Colton Library news

Haley Moser, Colton’s 2011 Teen Advisory Board member, was awarded one of two $200 scholarships given out to the members who showed the most outstanding academic success, leadership skills and civic involvement. The scholarships are donated by the Friends of Whitman County Library with proceeds from the library and the annual 4H Teen Dance.

Storytimes for October and November will focus on popular nursery rhymes at the Colton Library. Children will meet characters such as Little Bo Peep, Little Miss Muffet, and Peter Pumpkin-Eater during October. Halloween will be celebrated as well with crafts, stories, songs and snacks. Storytime is held every Monday at 10:30 for children ages 1-6.

Third Thursday, the after-school program at the Colton Library, is on October 20 and will have a Halloween theme. Join Librarian Holly Meyer for a Halloween craft, puzzles, stories, and a scary snack. Children from kindergarten to sixth grade are welcome to join in the fun at 3:15 pm.
