The fourth annual Peter Zornes Memorial Golf Tournament will be Saturday, June 25, at the Colfax Golf Club starting at 10 a.m. for registration, with a shotgun start at noon.

Organized by the Zornes family and the WSU veterinary school, the tournament is the primary funding source for a neuroscience scholarship in honor of Peter Zornes, a 2003 WSU graduate from Oakesdale who was a victim of a double homicide/suicide in Pullman in December of 2005.

A lifelong resident of Whitman County and very active in sports and music at both Oakesdale High School and WSU, Zornes studied and did research in Neuroscience with the goal of becoming a medical doctor. This tournament and scholarship help ensure that others will continue the work he deemed so important.

Registration fee of $80 includes 18 holes of golf, a box lunch, barbecue dinner, tournament golf shirt, prizes and lots of extras. Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. A putting contest and $100,000 shoot-out are also offered.

Participants can sign up as a single, pair, or foursome. Evening festivities are open to everyone and non-golfers can join the dinner for $15. Live music, awards, a silent auction and $1 raffles are among dinner features. !

Last boating class Saturday

One more free class for boating certification will be offered by the sheriff’s office next Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Public Service Building.

Boaters in Washington are required by law to take and pass a boater education course and have their education card with them when operating a boat with an engine of 15 or more horsepower. Boaters now between 12 and 35 are required to have the card and the law will be phased in to apply to older boaters. Boaters born before Jan. 1, 1955, will be exempt.

Once boaters pass the course, they can get the lifetime certification card for $10.

Course topics include basic boat handling, safety equipment, navigational rules and emergencies.

State parks passes now on sale

Washington state’s new Discover Pass is now on sale at recreational dealers and online and will be required of state parks users July 1.

Instituted after steep budget cuts to the state parks system by the legislature, the pass will be required for vehicle or boat access on lands managed by the state Parks and Recreation Commission, the state Department of Natural Resources and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Cost of annual pass is $30, while the cost of a one-day pass is $10. An additional $5 for transaction and dealer fees will be charged for annual passes. Daily passes have $1.50 in fees.

The pass must be displayed in the front windshield of vehicles on state recreation lands. Holders of some fishing and hunting licenses or campers who pay fees for sites in state parks are not required to display the pass.

A $99 penalty will be charged for vehicles on state lands without a pass. State officials will conduct an emphasis and compliance push over the Fourth of July weekend, according to a state press release.

Revenue from the pass sales will be divided with 84 percent to the parks department, 8 percent to WDFW and 8 percent to the DNR.

Passes are available at the following vendors in Whitman County: Colfax Corner Chevron, Arrow Machinery on SR 195, Almota Inn at Boyer Park, St. John Grange Supply in St. John, Startin’s Repair in LaCrosse, or in Pullman at Ace Hardware, Wal-Mart, Rennie Keasal’s Service or the Dept. of Licensing.

Passes can also be purchased online at http://www.discoverpass.wa.gov, by toll free telephone at (866)320-9933 or from agents at state park facilities.
