Colfax runs league mark to 10-0; rains bind time

Still dodging the rain clouds, Colfax baseball players looked like they could get in their first home game of the season Wednesday with Davenport making a stop at McDonald Park. The Gorillas had been booked for Tuesday, and that looked like it might happen until the rain clouds went to work Monday to undo the dry-out days logged at McDonald over the weekend.

Davenport, Northwest Christian next Tuesday and a makeup with Springdale are the remaining six league games on the Bulldogs’ league schedule.

Colfax rolled to St. George’s during Saturday’s warm weather and moved their league mark to 10-0 with two wins.

They took the first game 4-1 and the second game 22-8. The first round was the closest league battle yet for the Bulldogs, and the second game was a scramble.

Senior Alex Teade, who has put together a string of wins since his lone loss at Asotin, allowed the Dragons just two hits in taking the 4-1 win in the opener.

Teade struck out 13 Dragons and walked just two. The hosts didn’t score until they looped one run in the bottom of the seventh. A hit, two sacrifice flies and an RBI hit scored the run. Teade fanned the last Dragon batter to end it.

Colfax scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning. Catcher Kellen Morgan and Connor Appel walked in front of an infield single tagged by Cody Evans. Brady Ellis singled to score the first run; Brandon Heiser doubled in two more runs, and JJ Robinson launched a sacrifice fly to score the third run.

A double by Damon Buck scored the last run.

Reliever JJ Robinson was key for the Bulldogs in their 23-8 win in the second game. Robinson relieved starter Tyler McNannay in the fourth inning. He allowed just two hits for the balance of the game and struck out six Dragons.

Colfax scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Heiser doubled, Robinson singled, and Teade singled for the first run. A two-run double by Patrick Jacobs and RBI singles by Morgan and Evans stacked the Colfax lead.

St. George’s came right back in the bottom of the third inning to score five runs and regain the lead at 7-5.

“They had some bunt singles, and we began to throw the ball all over the park,” Coach Mike Parrish said.

Colfax answered with three runs in the top of the fourth with Robinson tagging a leadoff homer. Buck doubled for an RBI and Patrick Jacobs hit into a fielder’s choice for the third run.

Colfax went on to total 14 more runs with Robinson booking three RBIs on a double and Appel collecting two RBIs on a single.

Robinson finished 4-4 at the plate with two doubles, a homer and single.

After facing Davenport Wednesday in what could be the latest McDonald Park opener, the Bulldogs are scheduled to host Asotin Thursday in a non-leaguer. Coach Parrish noted the lineup could be a little creative for the non-leaguer as the Bulldogs approach a time crunch to get in six league games before the playoffs.
