Cattlemen slate annual dinner meet

Annual meeting of the Whitman County Cattlemen will be Tuesday, Nov. 23, with a sponsored social hour starting at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Palouse Empire Fair Community Building. Hilltop Inn/Porky’s Pit Barbecue will cater the dinner.

A donation of $10 per paid member is accepted at the door. The group will also be taking membership dues at the door for those not current. The meeting includes a report of the association’s activities from the past year, elections and reports from the board office.

Members are encouraged to bring items for the auction which will conclude the evening.

Uniontown will host fest, Dahmen artisans

Winter Fest, an antique and craft fair, will be at Uniontown’s Community Building from 9:30 to 5 on Dec. 4. Lunch and beverages will be available.

Also, Dahmen Barn at Uniontown will offer the works of 40 artists and artisans Dec. 4 from 10 to 5. Jewelry, ceramics, matted and framed photographs, textile arts using various techniques, hand made soaps, scented candles, wood crafted items, holiday and note cards, birdhouses, specialty foods, fishing rods, original art and prints, art glass and home decor items will be among the items offered.

From 10 to 1 Betsy McGreer, poet and photographer, will autograph “Wildflowers, Upriver,” and from 12 to 3 Martha Mullen of Pullman will be on hand to sign “Reflections of the Road - A Journey Through Whitman County Past and Present.”

The Shop at the Barn will offer specialty food items made from Palouse products including holiday gift baskets. Matt Maiorana, son of resident artist Jodee Maiorana, will play holiday music on the piano.

PCT’s ‘Inspecting Carol’ to begin two-week run

Pullman Civic Theatre’s newest production, Inspecting Carol, will open Dec. 10 at the Nye Street Theatre. Inspecting Carol is about an acting company’s awkward attempt at producing ‘A Christmas Carol.’

Performances will be Dec. 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. Matinees Dec. 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. at the Nye Street Theatre, Pullman.

Tickets for evening performances are $12 advance, $15 at the door. Matinees are $10 advance, $12 at the door. Ticket locations are Neill’s Flowers and Gifts, Wild Ivy, Dissmore’s IGA, PCT Box office at Nye Street Theatre.

Big Band at Dahmen

Hog Heaven Big Band will play Saturday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Dahmen Barn. Admission will be $8 for a couple, $5 for a single with children 12 and under free. Complimentary dance lessons are available on a drop-in basis at 6 p.m.

Ag Expo pics deadline Nov. 30

Deadline for entry into the Spokane Ag Expo’s 2011 photography contest is Nov. 30. Pictures should illustrate the impact of agriculture in the Inland Northwest.

Photos should by between 8 x 10 inches and 11 x 14 inches in size, mounted on cardboard or matting. Contestants can enter no more than four photos. Entries will be judged by area photographers based on theme, composition and creativity and will be displayed at the Ag Expo in the Spokane Convention Center next February.

Taste n Tear

Taste n Tear 4H will meet Saturday, Nov. 20, at 9 a.m. at the home of Helen Appel. Club members will make Thanksgiving favorites and assemble stockings for FISH.

Vandenbank daughter born

A girl, Brooke Marie, was born Nov. 9, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Angie and Justin Vandenbank. Maternal grandparents are Jon and Cheryl Zehner, Grangeville, Idaho, and Pat Wilson, Missoula. Paternal grandparents are Don and Shirley Post, Troy, Idaho, and Keven and Kim Vandenbank, Colome, S.D. Weighing seven pounds, 11 ounces at birth, the baby joins a sister, Hailey.

On Campus

ART

University of Idaho Pritchard Gallery will feature the work of Kota Ezawa until Dec. 5. The Bay area artist will present projected works in film, slide, and digital animations as well as lightbox watercolor. Pritchard gallery hours are 10 to 8 Tuesday through Saturday and 10 to 6 on Sundays.

WSU will present a world-class exhibition, “Contemporary Australian Aboriginal Art: From the Collection of Margaret Levi and Robert Kaplan,” until Dec. 11.

The Levi-Kaplan Collection was built over many years of extensive travel and study. The collectors have sought out the best work by Aboriginal artists to reveal the diversity, creativity and aesthetic power of one of the most exciting art movements in the world today.

Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 to 4 p.m. (open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays).

MUSIC

University of Idaho Auditorium Chamber Music Series will present the Boston Camerata: The Sacred Bridge - Jews, Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages Nov. 30, 7:30 p.m. at the U of I Auditorium. Tickets are $10, $17, $20 at BookPeople in downtown Moscow, at the door, or online:

The Boston Camerata will be joined by the Sharq Arabic Ensemble to perform the music played by separate groups from various parts of Europe, and then as they interacted in Spain before the expulsion of the Jews and Muslims at the time of Columbus.

At 2:30 on the day of the concert, members of the ensemble will play and talk about the creation of The Sacred Bridge Program in the University of Idaho Auditorium. The public is welcome to attend.

EXHIBITS

“Nature Twice,” a special exhibit of poetry about animals and nature, will be in WSU’s Conner Museum of Natural History until Nov. 21 on the WSU campus. Free and open to the public 8 to 5 p.m. daily in Abelson.

Only a few days remain to visit the expanded sale area in the Colfax Library. Besides hundreds of books, movie and music titles the library is selling surplus televisions, typewriters, desks, and more. Proceeds benefit all 14 branches through the Friends of the Library.

Children in grades 1-4 are invited to Third Thursday Club today, Nov. 18 ,. at 3:30. Participants will enjoy stories, games and snacks that pay tribute to turkeys, pilgrims and all things Thanksgiving.

All branches of Whitman County Library will close November 25-26 for Thanksgiving holiday.

Preschoolers are invited to fun educational classes each Thursday in the Colfax Library with Baby time programs at 10:10, Toddler Time at 10:30 and Preschool Time at 11:00.

Friday’s Play and Learn classes are a more interactive version that includes parents and caregivers, in the child’s learning experience. Play and Learn is each Friday from 10-11:30.
