SJE Eagles add three wins; Sparts pass Colton test

For the second time in a week, St. John/Endicott boys topped Colton in a District 9 North showdown Tuesday night.

This week’s Tuesday’s showdown went down to the wire with SJE having just enough in the tank to squeak out a 68-64 overtime win in the Colton gym.

The Wildcats held a three-point lead after a back and forth first half, but the Colton rims stiffened in the final frame and the Eagles forced the extra frame. A key 3-pointer in the waning seconds sealed the Eagles’ win.

Warren Miller had 15 points to lead SJE, and Dylan Schmick and Cole McCanna added 13 each. Josh Straughan’s 14 points were tops for Colton. Chase Druffel added 13, and Dustin Patchen threw down 12 for the ‘cats.

Tuesday night’s win was the third of the week for the Eagles.

SJE started its perfect week Friday night with a 68-57 win over guest LaCrosse/Washtucna. Cole McCanna’s 18 led an Eagle offense that registered four players in double-figure scoring. Jake Aune’s 16 points topped seven Tigercat scorers.

Saturday night, Schmick exploded for 22 points when St. John/Endicott traveled to Dayton and put the Bulldogs in the pound 52-43.

SE BOYS NORTH

Rosalia 9-0 18-0

Garfield/Palouse 8-2 12-4

St. John/Endicott 5-5 9-9

Asotin 4-5 10-7

Pomeroy 3-5 6-10

Colton 3-6 8-11

Tekoa/Oakesdale 2-6 3-14

LaX/Washtucna 2-7 7-12

Friday, Colton tried a hack-a-Spartan approach that kept the Wildcats close with Rosalia, but the league’s top team had too much in the tank and left the Wildcats’ gym with a 47-42 win to push their record to 18-0.

The battle was the Spartans’ first real test on the season, as Colton’s uber-physical style limited Rosalia shooters to just three buckets from the floor in the second half. The Spartans picked up enough proceeds at the toss line, 21 of 35.

Senior Jim Maley logged 17 points to spearhead the Spartan offense. Sophomore Dustin Patchen had 14 to top the Wildcats.

Colton rebounded from Friday’s tough loss to sink visiting Touchet 53-42 Saturday night.

Patchen logged a monster of a double-double, 20 points and 20 rebounds. Sam Robertson knocked in 15, and the Wildcats used a 19-6 charge out of halftime to scalp the Indians.

Tekoa/Oakesdale’s offense came up with enough fire power Saturday to offset the 30 points hung on the Nighthawks by Asotin’s Ben Servatius and take a 60-51 win away from the LC Valley.

Servatius exploded, but the Nighthawk D held the remaining Panthers to just 21 points. Brandon Hovde countered with 24 points from the post and Drake Hinkins added 22 for the ‘hawks.

Dustin Shepherd tipped in a missed shot in overtime to give Potlatch a 68-66 overtime win over Tekoa/Oakesdale Thursday night on the Loggers’ home court.

Led by Drake Hinkins, the Nighthawks forced the bonus period with a furious second half charge, but fell short when a jump shot landed in Shepherd’s hand at the buzzer.

Hinkins finished the game with 27 points to top the ‘hawks. Brandon Hovde added 15.

Garfield/Palouse Saturday night traveled to Pomeroy and plundered the Pirates with a 62-48 win. The Vikings sealed the win with a 23-13 second quarter and withstood a late Pomeroy charge for the win.

Blake Slocum led GP with 15; Gavin Burt chipped in 14 and Lee Roach had 12.

Friday, an oppressive Asotin defense stopped GP from putting together an offensive charge, and the Panthers took the game 53-41. The Viking defense did an adequate job with Asotin’s attack, but no GP player registered double figures on the Asotin court. Lee Roach and Trevor Cocking topped the Vikes with 8 points each.

Defending state champs Tri-Cities Prep grabbed an early lead over LaCrosse/Washtucna Saturday night at LaCrosse and the Jaguars used their trademark defense to put the Tigercats away 45-34. Jeff Zimmer had 10 points to pace the ‘cats.
