  • Books on area railroad history explain origin of Palouse RR cut

    Dec 30, 2010

The bridge across a former railroad cut at Palouse was part of an elaborate system of railroad structures in the town. The W. Church Street bridge, located on highway 272 into Palouse, was the site of the suicide of a 16-year-old Palouse youth in October. The city council is currently working to place “no trespassing” signs at either end of the bridge. The structure dates back to the days when Palouse was a three-railroad town. The origin of the railroad cut can be a mystery to newcomers in town, but long-time residents can recall the days whe...

  • Don Brunell - A new way of looking at things

    Dec 30, 2010

It’s been said that during the worst of times, things get fixed. That adage is certainly ringing true in 2011. Our crushing financial crisis at all levels of government is sending shock waves through the halls of government these days bringing elected officials to their senses about spending. While the voting public was far ahead of the politicians and bureaucrats in ringing the alarm bell, the message has finally gotten through. Legislatures around the country are slowing the rate of spending by necessity, and voters sent a clear message l...

  • Adele Ferguson - Legislators face long haul

    Dec 30, 2010

SO BACK to the marble halls they’ll come, the lawyers and the farmers, the teachers and the salesmen, transformed by marks on a ballot into citizen legislators. They’re becoming a vanishing breed. Because the legislature takes more and more time, the kind of people who can or will give of themselves is changing. Eventually it will boil down to a few categories. There will always be the special interest legislator, there to pursue benefits for his industry or profession or resist efforts to downgrade them. There will be the retired and/or wea...

  • W. Bruce Cameron - My Diet Diary

    Dec 30, 2010

I’ve finally gotten to the point in my life where it’s no longer good enough to just talk about dieting — I need to talk about dieting seriously. Apparently, as people get older, something happens to their bodies that medical doctors describe as “unfair.” (I’m not saying I’m “old.” At my age, it’s more that I’m “in denial.”) To counter these totally unfair medical conditions, it’s necessary to change our diets so that they become more “healthy” and less “good.” As an experiment, I decided to journal my results, keeping a “diet diary” so...

  • Opinion - The worst decade ever?

    Dec 30, 2010

Ed Rendel, governor of Pennsylvania, recently called America a country of wusses. He was inspired to speak out because a snowstorm postponed a NFL game. Just before his announcement, a survey reported that 54 percent of Americans thought the decade ending Friday has been the worst ever in American history. If a majority of Americans think this is the worst decade ever, we just may be a bunch of wusses. Or we just may be a bunch of uneducated people. These last ten years—the first decade of the new millennium—have brought some difficulties. The...

  • STRANGE BUT TRUE - Dec. 30, 2010

    Samantha Weaver|Dec 30, 2010

It was British novelist and essayist Arthur Koestler who made the following sage observation: “The more original a discovery, the more obvious it seems afterwards.” One might think that famed model and businesswoman Tyra Banks would rely on a plethora of pricey cosmetics and other aids — and she doubtless does. But she claims that the most important beauty product she uses is Vaseline. According to a 2010 study conducted in the Netherlands, symptoms of asthma can be successfully treated by riding a roller coaster. Singles, take note: The datin...

Dear Savvy Senior, My wife and I have been thinking about purchasing a long-term care insurance policy, but have found the monthly premiums to be very expensive. How can we find affordable coverage? Planning Ahead Dear Planning, The biggest factor that keeps millions of Americans from purchasing long-term care (LTC) insurance is the high price tag. Depending on your age, you and your wife could be looking at $7,000 a year (if not more) to purchase a comprehensive policy that covers nursing home care, assisted living and in-home care....
