    Skiing at Bluewood, the Dayton area resort popular with skiers in the southeast corner of the state, officially opened last Thursday for the start of its 34th season. They planned to operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. over the weekend with about 50 percent of the primary trails open for skiing at a discount rate of $25 for the first weekend.     Colfax boys battled to a 50-45 win Tuesday on their home court against a talented LRS Bronco team to finish with a 2-1 mark over the last three games. The not-so-pretty win over the Broncos finished a streak of battles against some of the top teams in the NE race this year.     Colton and St. John/Endicott girls bagged big wins over the weekend to remain at the head of the pack in the SE 1B race. Both teams are undefeated in league play and the lone loss sustained to date by the league leaders came at the start of the season when the Eagles girls hosted Colfax.     Area railroad enthusiasts next summer will get a chance to ride an excursion train on the scenic St. Maries River Railroad between Plummer and St. Maries.     Palouse Chamber of Commerce President Bev Pearce told Palouse City Council members Dec. 11 that chamber members have tentatively agreed to pay up to $1,500 a month to keep the public restroom open during the winter months.     Whitman County commissioners decided Monday to have the planning commission consider reducing the minimum size requirement for commercial lots in the Pullman-Moscow Corridor. Land owners and realtors from the corridor asked for changes to allow for developments under the current three-acre minimum size.   • County 2013 budget $200K short; plan to balance of 2012 surplus

    Commissioners still plan to pass a deficit budget for Whitman County’s operating plan in 2013. The $59.58 million budget is expected to spend $200,000 more than it will earn in revenue. The deficit will be in the $13.29 million current expense budget which is the main operations budget for the county.     One day prior to the official start of commercial operations, the Palouse Wind farm shut down when strong winds were recorded on the Naff Ridge site between Oakesdale and Rosalia.
