    Jeslyn Lemke, Gazette Reporter|Nov 26, 2009

A non-profit in Colfax is claiming to be giving away free time-share packages to returning veterans around the U.S. “I felt strongly that one of the best things we can do is put the families together in a quiet place away from the military organization,” said Gary Martin, director of the Honor Them Foundation. Martin declined to release contact information for the four soldiers who have already booked a package, saying this is a private time for them and their families. He also declined to release names of companies donating the time sha...

  • Bruce Cameron - Nov. 26, 2009

    Nov 26, 2009

Food Rules W. BRUCE CAMERON When it comes to food, my basic philosophy is that I won’t eat anything that eats me first. I do understand, though, that there are many people who have religious or moral restrictions on what they can put in their mouths, and my attitude toward them is, “Please pass your sandwich.” My friend Norma is from Texas, where the motto is “Dinner Tastes Better If You Shoot It.” For many years, I’ve enjoyed her savory Texas-style ribs and beef-laden chili, so I was somewhat brutally traumatized to hear that she had decided...

  • Don Brunell - Nov. 26, 2009

    Nov 26, 2009

It is a classic case of “good news, bad news.” The good news is that, as Thanksgiving approaches, there are hopeful signs that our economy, investments and 401k retirement funds are starting to rebound. Heading into a day when we traditionally give thanks for our blessings, people do not appear in as much of a panic over job losses as they did a year ago. However, many still worry about running out of money, losing their homes or simply finding a job. The country’s mood is more subdued this year. Last year, employers were shedding jobs, financi...

  • Adele Ferguson - Nov. 26, 2009

    Nov 26, 2009

THEY SAY the economic downturn we are suffering is a recession until it affects you and yours personally and then it becomes a depression. Well, the depression is on the premises. Mine. that is. The depression arrived when a member of my family lost her job. She worked in a small office that deals with escrow assistance and when the housing boom went bust, the owners first cut the hours of employees to avoid laying anyone off. She was down to two days a week when the ceiling fell in and the owners laid off everybody but the manager. So what do...

One of the biggest excuses for not shopping locally, especially in small towns, is the lack of choices. But if you take a second look, there might be more available than you realize. Within an hour of looking in downtown Colfax, a shopper can find hand-carved wine bottle openers, handmade pillows, crystal, truck accessories, homemade soap, vintage items, John Deere toys, home décor signs,...

There were 3,978 reports that showed no money received or spent, but included more than 50,000 jobs created or retained. Scientists dig up the f...
