  • Suspect arrested in Hay area with Okanogan warrant

    A $20,000 bond for pre-trial release was set for Scott D. Jess, 40, after he was booked into the county jail late Nov. 6 night on probable charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and domestic violence. Jess is also being held in the jail on an arrest warrant issued by Okanogan County. According to the arrest report, deputies and a trooper responded to a report of a probable domestic violence at a residence on Big Alkali Road in the Hay area.     Returning to the state finals after an absence of four years, Colton’s Wildcats pegged a 3-1 record in the SunDome at Yakima to finish third in the state 1B volleyball playoff Friday. The Wildcats defeated the Odessa Tigers in a trophy round which matched up the losers of the semi-final rounds.     With a dominant win over Republic to open the 1B football playoffs Nov. 10, Garfield/Palouse advanced to the state quarterfinals, to play unbeaten Odessa Friday in Royal City. The same matchup happened three years ago in the playoffs, Garfield/Palouse winning at Odessa, against a team that was then Odessa/Harrington.     Oakesdale Nighthawks rolled to the Sundome for the 1B tourney with one goal in mind: a threepeat. The ‘hawks kept the big trophy with three tidy sweeps in their first three matches and a win over Pomeroy, their SE foe, in a four-gamer in the championship round.     Colfax Bulldogs took the state 2B volleyball championship Friday at the SunDome in Yakima by sweeping their first three foes and out-lasing a tough Mossyrock team in a five-game battle which went down to the final points in a fifth game. “Mossyrock was a very good team, they made it tough on us,” Colfax Coach Sue Doering commented.     The annual Memorial Trees of Light and Remembrance Ceremony, sponsored by Friends of Hospice, is set for early December. The event is an opportunity for people to honor the name and memory of loved ones who have died, whether in the past year or decades ago.   • Haunted Palouse sells 3,547 tickets

    The 16th Haunted Palouse is now in the books with a total of 3,547 tickets sold for the four-night event, Oct. 20-21 and 27-28. The total was more than last year, and above the 10-year average of 3,321. Total money raised, when all costs are covered, is expected to be between $50,000 and $60,000.     Jarrod Pfaff will return as mayor of Garfield in January, winning last week’s election over incumbent Ray McCown. The challenger totaled 129 votes to McCown’s 84.     The Board of County Commissioners lifted the moratorium on intergovernmental loans Oct. 16, allowing junior taxing districts to once again borrow from the county. The moratorium was imposed Jan.17, 2017. In 2016 the county had a lot of requests to borrow money from the county to cover short-term, lower dollar spending. It was usually small loans.   • County receives grant for road safety projects

    Whitman County was chosen last week to receive a $620,000 grant for local roads from the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program. The money will be used to re-stripe county roads, install rumblestrips and add guardrails. Roads to be re-striped will be those which have not been painted for at least three years. Segments of five roads will get rumblestrips cut into centerlines. “I hate rumblestrips. But they simply save lives,” said Mark Storey, county public works director.
