  • County asks Colfax to take over, fix CETC

    Colfax city council members Monday night were briefed on the possibility of acquiring the CETC building for use as a community center. Mayor Norma Becker said she was advised earlier Monday by County Commissioner Greg Partch that they had discussed turning the CETC over to the City of Colfax. The city would have to make repairs on the building to put it to use.   • Fair sells pavers to fund schoolhouse

    The old schoolhouse is in need of a walkway. Last year, the Jones School house was moved from Dusty to the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds. This year, the Fair Foundation’s effort is to raise money to lay a solid entryway of engraved pavers. The flat, square granite pavers can be engraved, with all proceeds going to the cost of making them, and regular maintenance and improvements for the schoolhouse.   • Car on guardrail after SR 26 wreck

    The 2007 Chevrolet Equinox of Dayton resident Jean Sunderland, 86, rests atop the eastbound guard rail just west of Colfax on State Route 26. According to the report from the Washington State Patrol, Sunderland left the roadway to the right while driving eastbound, struck a rock embankment and ran into the end of the guard rail by PCC Railroad overpass. His vehicle spun around and landed on top of the guard rail. Sunderland was hospitalized with chest pain while his passenger, Aurthur Sunderland, was treated for hand injuries.   • Locals grill pols at library forum

    Three candidates for Colfax mayor and four candidates for the district three seat on the Port of Whitman commission fielded questions last Wednesday night, July 27, in a League of Women Voters forum at the Whitman County Library. The forum was for candidates on the ballot for the primary election round. Ballots for the primary were mailed out from the auditor’s elections office Friday.   • WSU 'Move Out, Pitch In' students donate 48 tons to local charities

    Washington State University students left local charities almost 43 tons of food and housewares when they left town for the summer. Judi Dunn-Gray, Whitman County’s recycling coordinator, reported Monday the “Move Out, Pitch In” campaign collected 40.12 tons of furniture, clothing and assorted sundries from students in off-campus housing. “Anything that doesn’t fit in the car usually gets left behind,” said Dunn-Gray.     Moscow Mini Vans scored a run in the bottom of the last inning Saturday to take the championship of the benefit softball tournament sponsored by Colfax Police Department. Six teams entered the tournament which benefits the Special Olympics. Colfax entries were “The Pigs” and “The Hosers,” representing the police and fire departments, The softball tourney supplanted the Special Olympics golf tournament which has been conducted for several years to benefit the Special Olympics.     Name of the local entry in this week’s Little League tournament at Colville has been changed to the Tri-County Patriots to better reflect the recruits the team has picked up from towns outside of Colfax. For their first three tournaments they were the Colfax 12-under team. After entering the Orofino three-day tourney with just nine players two weeks ago, Coach Wayne Gregory expects to have 12 players on the roster for the trip to Colville.
