  • BREAKING: State shuts down Bank of Whitman

    State and federal banking regulators shut down the Bank of Whitman Friday night, transferring much of its assets to Tacoma-based Columbia Banking System. Eight of the bank's 20 branches will re-open Monday as Columbia State Bank. Twelve branches, including three in Whitman County will be shuttered. Bank of Whitman is the third bank to be closed in the state this year.     Summer reading at the Tekoa Library concluded with 33 youngsters completing the reading requirements. Volunteer Theresa Raines put together all of the craft projects during the six week summer reading program. The cousins came from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Illinois.   • Fire Chief Pat Wilkins retires after 27 years

    Pullman Fire Chief Pat Wilkins, who has headed the department for 27 years, announced his retirement last week, and Mayor Glenn Johnson appointed Operations Chief Mike Heston as the acting fire chief. Wilkins’ retirement will be effective Aug. 9, and Heston will begin duties as alternate chief Aug. 10.
