A regularly scheduled public hearing on the Colfax school’s tight budget will be Monday, July 12 during the district board meeting. The board session begins at 7 p.m. The district for the third year is scaling back through nickel and diming many district funds, the result of a gradual loss in state funds through declining enrollment. County Coroner Peter Martin in an official finding issued Friday said Robert J. Clausen, 73, Spring Valley, died from positional asphyxia due to head, neck and chest injuries in a tractor rollover accident. Mr. Clausen was spraying weeds along a creek south of the Waterman Road, east of Rosalia, when the tractor he was operating rolled into a creek. He was found late June 24. Official time to move the former Dusty School building to the fairground at Mockonema will be next Wednesday, July 14, beginning at 9 a.m. Catlow Movers of Spokane have prepared the 24 X 48 building, formerly known as the Jones School, for the move but decided to delay the operation until after the holiday traffic week. The move will cover eight miles from east Dusty to the fairground at Mockonema. More than 370 people are expected to rally from around the county for this year’s edition of Relay for Life Friday night at the Colfax High School track. An angry crowd Tuesday night criticized the firing of Fire Chief Ralph Walter during an hour-long session in a packed city council room. Two years of collecting meteorological data have given wind farm company First Wind enough information to know Whitman County’s Naff Ridge is the site to develop a wind farm. “We’re excited about the potential of bringing wind power to Whitman County,” said Ben Fairbanks, the Boston-based company’s director of development for the Northwest. John F. Mabe A graveside service for John F. Mabe, 91, life-long Colfax resident, will be Friday, July 9, at 10 a.m. at the Bethel Cemetery in Steptoe. He died Friday, July 2, 2010, at Whitman Hospital in Colfax. Born Feb. 24, 1919, in Colfax to Jess and Jessie Robinson Mabe, he was one of nine children in the Mabe family.
