  • Straughan perfect in Moses Lake

    Jake Straughan threw a perfect game over Spring Break. Playing at Moses Lake’s Big Bend Community College against Lake Roosevelt of Coulee Dam, Wash., the Colton senior threw 70 pitches for 54 strikes, 16 balls, 14 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. The Wildcats won the game 5-0 in the first of two games played April 4. Only one ball cleared the infield in the game, which was caught by Grant Kinzer with a diving catch.     Softball season is underway in Colton as the Wildcats played their second game of the year Tuesday, beating Orofino 8-6. After the start of practices got delayed by the basketball team winning a sixth state championship, for which catcher Carrie Hennigar led the cheerleaders, the Colton team got in their 12 required practices before their first game.     Junior Erica Eng pitches for both wins on road Colfax softball players Saturday finally opened their season with a road trip to Davenport where they posted two strong wins over the Gorillas. They dropped the Gorillas 10-1 in the first game of the NE opener and 13-3 in the second game. The Saturday wins at Davenport came after the league start was postponed by a rainout the previous week.     Colfax Community Cleanup Week is from Friday, April 11, to Saturday, April 19. The City of Colfax is joining the Colfax Downtown Association, Colfax Chamber of Commerce, Whitman County Library, Colfax Arts Council, Colfax Rotary Club and the Colfax School District as the organizations participate in the Third Annual Community Cleanup.     Starbuck may be the center for a wheat straw processing plant. But it remains to be seen if Whitman County farmers will benefit from it. Mark Lewis and Dave Powers of Columbia Pulp Mill wanted to talk to farmers about their proposal to build a straw processing plant near Starbuck, but not one farmer attended the Tuesday morning presentation with the exception of county and port commissioners.     The Palouse Knowledge Corridor held its spring Business Showcase in Pullman March 31. Held at BellTower Events Venue in Pullman, representatives from seven businesses presented their efforts to gathered members of the public and potential investors. Each presenter showcased their business in a 15-minute format.     Port of Whitman County commissioners April 3 noted continuing changes at Boyer Park and Marina. A port application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for expansion of the RV portion of the park with another 12 to 14 spaces was discussed.
