    County sheriff’s Sgt. Don Anderson planned to be “out there” working one more shift Wednesday night before he turns in his equipment today and officially retires after working for the department since February of 1983. Today, March 31, also marks Anderson’s 65th birthday. Although he enjoys working with the “good bunch” who serve in the sheriff’s office, Anderson has been aiming at retirement for the last couple of years.   • Ledgerwood retires after 45-year hospital career

    It was 1965. Nineteen-year-old Linda Ledgerwood was working a few trial weeks as the possible “new secretary” for St. Ignatius Hospital in Colfax. “I actually got paid in petty cash,” she remembers. Forty-five years later, 65-year-old Ledgerwood is wrapping up a life-long career as human resources director for Whitman Hospital.   • Studs given another week

    Washington State Department of Transportation extended the studded tire deadline until next Thursday, April 7. Officials said winter conditions in the mountains and parts of eastern Washington prompted the extension from the March 31 deadline. The requirement to remove studded tires is to minimize damage done to state roadways. Drivers caught driving with studded tires after April 7 will be ticketed.... Full story

    Whitman County sheriff’s deputies booked into jail Nathaniel B. Simon II, 54, Albion, Tuesday night on probable charges that he imprisoned, strangled and mutilated his live-in girlfriend, Debra Lowry, 46. Deputies were called to Simon’s Albion home after receiving a call from Lowry Tuesday afternoon. Lowry reported she had been choked unconscious and had words carved into her chest. Mrs. Abegglen died last Wednesday, March 23, 2011, in Spokane. She has lived in Spokane since 1993.     About $60 worth of food was raised and donated to the local food bank during the food for fines drive at Endicott, Librarian Caroline Morasch reported. The annual penny drive to fund children’s programs will continue through April 16. All the money raised during the penny drive will benefit children’s programs throughout the year. Friends of Whitman County Library are sponsoring a raffle to support a complete renovation of the Endicott library.     Volunteers are joining forces to make the St. John Heritage Museum a reality for the community. Fund raising for phase one of the building renovation kicks off Saturday, April 9 with the group’s first crab feed beginning at 6 p.m. in the St. John Community Building.
