  • Trucker escapes tanker crash

    A Harrington trucker escaped injury late March 1 when he lost control of this semi tractor-trailer while rounding a curve on Highway 23 just south of Lamont. Troopers, Lamont fire volunteers and Department of Transportation crews responded to the scene which blocked off one lane of the highway while the wrecked tanker was off-loaded. When Lamont fire volunteers arrived at the scene the driver of the semi, Dean R.     Palouse now has a council vacancy for position No. 1 after Mike Milano resigned in February to conclude six years on the council. “I had some personal stuff to attend to, and I won’t be able to devote myself fully to the job so I thought it best to move on,” said Milano.     A new club has formed to bolster Garfield Palouse athletics. The Viking Crew began over Christmas break with a project which brought the Viking Hall of Fame to the entryway of the gym. The group officially started last month. Organizers began the Viking Crew for three main purposes, said co-fundraising chairwoman Angie Griner.     Cooper’s Corner to remain open into May State and local postal officials cut a red, white and blue-striped ribbon in front of a stack of new mail boxes Friday morning to open the Village Post Office at Steptoe’s Friendly Mart. The Friendly Mart location will eventually take the place of the official post office at Cooper’s Corner antique store.   • Sheriff warns of battery thefts

    Sheriff Brett Myers issued a warning to Whitman County residents of a ring of battery thieves striking the area. Myers said his deputies have received reports of large-scale battery thefts in the Pullman and LaCrosse areas. The thieves, he said, are targeting farm equipment and large trucks that contain multiple batteries. In each case, between 15 and 25 batteries were taken from vehicles parked or stored close to each other.   • 'Incredible moving bridge' gets weight limits

    Truckers will soon have to abide by new rules to cross Whitman County’s Hatley Bridge on the Wawawai -Pullman Road which spans Union Flat Creek near the top of the Wawawai grade. Public Works Director Mark Storey reported to commissioners Monday that Nicholls Engineering of Spokane recommended lowering the weight limit on the bridge, which is affectionately dubbed “the incredible moving bridge.” Storey said Nicholls’ inspection found the concrete bridge deck moved enough off its foundation to require load restrictions.   • Solar panels to go up at Palouse Center

    A group of volunteers will install 10 solar panels on the roof of the new Palouse Community Center Saturday. So Happy It’s Tuesday, a local group of renewable energy enthusiasts, will install the panels as a memorial to Mike Carlton, a former Pullman Police Officer and group member who died last year. So Happy It’s Tuesday raised $12,629 for the project. The 2,400 watt panels are expected to generate about 3,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which will save the center $210 a year.     Colfax Officer Perry Tate was called early Friday morning to investigate a report of a suspect traveling southbound at high-speed on Main Street. The suspect was reported to be a black Chihuahua. Janel Goebel, county parks staffer, reported she saw a tiny suspect running back and forth across Main Street as she arrived for work at the Public Service Building around 8:30.     More than 2,000 Miami students walked out of class and took to the streets on Friday in a show of solidarity with a high school valedictorian ordered to leave the United States by an immigration judge. A judge on Monday denied a green card request by Daniela Pelaez, an 18-year-old who was born in Colombia and brought by her parents to the United States when she was four.     Texas Congressman Ron Paul won the straw poll taken of Whitman County Republicans during the party’s caucuses last Saturday. Though former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney took the statewide win, Paul posted a close win in the non-binding countywide returns over former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. “He’s a consistent conservative.     The Port of Whitman County is now part-owner of flavored juice company Ecowell. Port commissioners accepted a settlement offer from Ecowell at their regular meeting last Thursday for unpaid rent that included shares of stock in its parent company. “You might in 10 years get some money out of it.     An economic study commissioned by Boise-based Hawkins Companies found its proposed shopping center at the Idaho state line will create 938 to 1,069 new jobs. C. Paul Wazzan and Joseph K. Tanimura of the Berkley Research Group in Los Angeles used retail economic models to determine the amount of employees that should be at the 714,000-square-foot shopping center and how much they will be paid.     Colfax boys hoist the state 2B trophy after defeating league foe Northwest Christian in the first state title game Saturday afternoon at the Spokane Arena.
