Hospital Highlights-Imaging Services & Orthopedics

Imaging Services play a vital role in the diagnostic evaluation of our patients. Whitman Hospital’s Radiology Department has worked to make their Department the best that it can be. This time of year, the Radiology team may have the opportunity to serve you should you have an injury from a winter time sport. Many skiing injuries involve extremities – especially the knee.

Our Radiology Team works closely with the orthopedic surgeons to ensure the appropriate tests are performed for the best patient outcomes possible. Our certified technologists perform not only routine CT and MRI’s specific to orthopedic exams, but also excel in performing MRI and CT exams that involve pre-surgical imaging. These images are used to develop computerized pre-surgical prosthetic planning specific to each patient. For the patient, this translates into more exact planning for their knee replacement, which cuts down in both surgery time and recovery time.

Other orthopedic exams we offer include fluoroscopic arthrograms with most of our patients coming in for shoulder and/or hip arthrograms. This exam involves a highly trained x-ray technologist and the radiologist. These fluoroscopic exams (real-time imaging utilizing x-ray) are followed by an MRI of the patient’s joint to assess joint stability, potential pathology, and possible tears or abnormal disruption of the joint itself for more specific diagnosis.

All of our technologists are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Each technologist has completed a college degree in radiology, including specific training in performing high quality orthopedic x-rays. Members of the radiology team are caring, knowledgeable, experienced, and ready to offer our patients the best diagnostic resources that today’s technology has to offer.

All of our exams are read by Palouse Imaging Consultants (a local group of radiologists board certified with the American College of Radiology). We have a Radiologist on-site seven hours per day Monday through Friday and they are available to view and report on images 24 hours/7 days per week to ensure timeliness of reports and the highest quality of patient care.

Orthopedic surgeons operating at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center include Graeme French, MD, Andrea Barrett, MD and Steven Pennington MD.
