‘How to Succeed’

starts 2-week run at RTOP Theater

“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” opens a two-week run at Regional Theatre of the Palouse in Pullman. The music and lyrics for the show, which opened on Broadway in 1961, are by Frank Loesser and the book is by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert. The show is based on Shepherd Mead’s 1952 book.

Performances dates are Nov. 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 at the RTOP, 122 N. Grand Ave. in Pullman. Show times are 7 p.m. with additional matinees at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 3 and 10.

The musical ran for 1,417 performances and won seven Tony awards.

Artistic Director John Rich has worked with his production team to recreate the early 1960s with everything from hairstyles and costumes to sets and props.

Newest addition to the RTOP team is Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson. Johnson, WSU’s “voice of the Cougs” allowed RTOP to record his clear, rich sound to bring the voice of the book to life.

Tickets are on sale now and reservations can be made by calling the RTOP Box Office, 509-334-0750. Reserved tickets are $17 for adults and $10 for children; and tickets purchased at the door are $20 for adults and $12 for children. Season passes are also available.

Athenaeum

Members met Oct. 17 at the home of Linda Marler with Maxine Lange giving a presentation on the biography of Helen Hayes.

President Mary Ann Wigen presided over the semi-annual business meeting. The hostess served pumpkin bars, coffee and punch.

Next meeting will be Nov. 2 at the home of Sherry Cox with Phyllis Kincaid providing the program on the life of Lucille Ball.

Correction: Guest speaker Oct. 5 was Barbara J. Morgan who spoke on her experiences working in the nursing home industry.

PEO

Chapter AF members met last Monday, Oct. 22. at the home of Pat Hartman with 11 members and one guest present. Liane Smith was co-hostess.

Response to roll call was naming a favorite sport.

Tickets for the club’s annual “dessert-a-month” event are being sold now and can be purchased from any PEO member until Dec. 10. Two winners will be drawn at our Christmas social at that time. This is the annual fund raising event for the scholarship fund.

Robyn Johnson presented a program on Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions with members participating.

Next scheduled meeting will be Monday, Nov. 12, at the home of Lynne Bruya.

Bell, Alyssa Lauren Emily, born Oct. 19 at seven pounds, 13 ounces, first child for Brett and April Bell of Pullman. Paternal grandparents are Ralph and Carole Bell of Tracy, Calif. Maternal grandparent is Janet Clausen of Hayward, Calif.

Swinney, Brady Calvin, was born Oct. 22 at eight pounds, one ounce, first child to Doug and Kadyn Swinney of Palouse. Paternal grandparents are Steve and Frankie Swinney of Palouse. Maternal grandparents are Roger and Lyn Pennell of Garfield.

MUSIC

WSU Jazz Festival will feature a free jazz performances, highlighted by a faculty concert at noon, Wednesday, Nov. 14. The WSU Jazz Big Band, directed by Greg Yasinitsky, will play in the Bryan Hall Theatre. School groups from throughout the Northwest will perform in Kimbrough Concert Hall 8-11:40 a.m. and 2:20-3:40 p.m. WSU faculty will present clinics at 10 and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at various locations in Kimbrough.

BOOKMARK

Four special programs will be at the St. John Library during the first week in November will be a busy one at the St. John Library with plus our usual Friday Storytime at 11.

Librarian Clancy and Storyteller Mrs. McGillicutty invite everyone to Family Storytime Nov. 5. This program has moved to the first Monday of the month at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, November 7, 12:30-2 p.m. the School’s Out Wednesday theme will be Snakes Alive. Dr. Gordon Wilson will share his reptile and amphibian expertise with kids and adults. Live animals will be on display.

Medicare supplement open enrollment time is here again and .Nov. 9, SHIBA volunteer Joyce Leonard will be at the library from 10 to 1 to provide Medicare recipients free and impartial information tailored to meet individual needs.

On November 9 at 4 p.m. kids age 12 and up can come learn the art of Bottle Cap Jewelry with Teen Librarian Chelsea Leachman.

Teen Librarian Chelsea Leachman will be at the Palouse Library Friday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. for Teens After Hours, a program for grades 6-12 Teens can use the computers, play games and use their imagination to decorate cupcakes which will be consumed after the competition.

Palouse Library is open Tuesdays 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursdays 2 to 6 p.m. and Fridays, noon to 6 p.m.

Photographer Aaron Cowan will be a the Colfax Library Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. for of Meet the Artist. Cowen’s work can be viewed in the foyer of the Colfax Library or online at http://www.aaroncowanphotos.com.

International Games Day comes to the Colfax Library Saturday, Nov. 3 from 2-4 p.m. Invite your friends and family members for a day of games suitable for all ages.

Physical therapist, Robyn Tramposch, in partnership with Whitman Hospital, helps residents avoid joint aches and pains through simple postural changes and exercise on Wednesday, November 7 at 6 p.m. in the Colfax Library and Saturday, November 10 at 2 p.m. in the Rosalia Library.
