ON CAMPUS

Jones Theatre

Dogs in hats, giant noses and fishing fish will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, in Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre when virtuoso mime and actor Michael Cooper brings his one-man extravaganza, “Masked Marvels and Wondertales,” to Washington State University. The show is part of WSU Performing Arts’ spring series.

Spinning tales from memories of growing up in Maine as the son of a traveling horse doctor, Cooper weaves together a colorful cast of masked characters, original stories of courage and wonder and outlandish stilt dancing. The dazzling result has been described by critics as awe-inspiring, breathtaking and full of surprises.

Seating is reserved. Tickets cost $14 for adults and $7 for students and youths. Group rates and WSU Alumni Association member discounts are available. Tickets may be purchased at TicketsWest outlets - including Beasley Coliseum (open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday), online, by phone or at the Daggy Hall ticket office beginning two hours before the performance.

Cooper’s elaborately hand-crafted masks, which take up to 300 hours each to create, rise above the world of ancient theater craft into the realm of fine art. A gifted wordsmith, nuanced poet, first-rate comedian and master storyteller, he will delight audiences of all ages.

After completing a degree in peace studies from Goddard College, Cooper studied theater with Tony Montanaro in Maine and mime Etienne Decroux in Paris. For nearly 30 years, he has performed for audiences of every age at venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Hong Kong International Children’s Festival, Comedy Store in Los Angeles, Dublin Theater Festival, Great Woods, Eugene O’Neill Theater, Bass Performance Hall and Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
