Rosalia Battle Days

Visitors pack the streets to celebrate event

ROSALIA - Battle Days brought the community together for a weekend of celebration and honor in Rosalia.

The fun began at 3:30 p.m. with free swimming and games at the pool. Later that evening, the Battle Days Association provided a dinner with live music at the Rosalia City Park.

Saturday started out bright and early for the runners and walkers of the community.

Rosalia's annual fun run took runners from the fire station through South Whitman Avenue to the monument at Steptoe Battlefield State Park. Jacob Brown took first place in the 5K at 28:05. A 2.5-mile Fun Run also took place that morning, with Hattie Mills placing 1st at 26:05.

Boy Scout Troop 588 served a pancake breakfast on the day.

While the streets were flooded with vendors and visitors, children took to the streets for the Kids Parade at 10:30 a.m. An array of rollerblades, bikes, quads, and more was on display until the Grand Parade began. This year's town marshals, John and Penni Barringer, debuted in the Grand Parade.

Tekoa's "Par-Tee-Time" float took home another award on the day as the float was awarded Judges Choice. The float featured the newly crowned Queen Lulu Taylor and Princesses Clare Wilkins and Denali Chase.

Other events on the day included Italian sodas sold by the Rosalia High School senior class, a dunk tank, a bicycle obstacle course, a 50/50 raffle at the fire station and a raffle benefiting the local high school booster club.

The raffle, organized by Mike Day, a longtime Rosalia local, collected $881, with proceeds to be split between the Tekoa and Rosalia booster clubs.

Day puts on the raffle yearly for the town's summer event, receiving donations from local businesses and residents for the prize pool.

The funds raised from the raffle are donated to local businesses to help keep money in the community.

"Thank you to everybody who's bought tickets in the past. A big thank you to the Gazette for all that they do for Whitman County," he said.
