Garfield-Palouse Vikings capture district title

Girls took first by 50 points, Eagle boys finished third

PALOUSE - After the two-day 1B and 2B district championship track meet, the Garfield-Palouse Vikings girls stood alone atop the podium.

The meet was held Wednesday, May 15, and Saturday, May 18, in Ritzville.

Wednesday was primarily the finals for most of the field events, with a few happening Saturday. The meet Saturday was primarily the finals for the running events, with top times heading to the state meet in Yakima, Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25.

The Viking girls scored 147.5 team points to capture the district title. The Oakesdale Nighthawks finished fourth with 63 team points, followed by the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Eagles with 46 points.

The boys side saw Valley Christian take first, scoring 136 team points. The Eagles finished third with 54 team points, followed by the Vikings in fifth, and the Nighthawks in 10th.

For 2B, the boys overall winner was St. George's with 116 team points. The Colfax Bulldogs finished third with 77 points.

St. George's also captured the girls title with 138 team points. Colfax finished fifth with 51 team points.

The state tournament will host both the 1B and 2B schools in Yakima.

Some events have preliminary rounds, taking place Thursday, May 23, while other events start Friday, May 24, that are finals.

Saturday, May 25, is the final day of the meet, where all running events and field events will be finals, with athletes competing for medals and top finishes to end their season on a positive note.

Look for the Oakesdale and Garfield-Palouse girls to dominate the distance and field events, with Colfax producing solid scores in the sprint events and pole vault.
