Serving Whitman County since 1877
Runs opposed for first time since 2018
COLFAX — Election filings for 2024 have ended, and many new candidates filed from Monday, May 6, to Friday, May 10. This year, two notable filings oppose local State Representative Joe Schmick, who has run unopposed for the last six years for the ninth district.
Two Democrats filed on Friday, May 10. Arianna Arends and Pam Kohlmeier, both of Spokane, will challenge Schmick in the primary. The top two vote-getters from the August primary will advance to the November general election.
“I welcome the opportunity to engage with fellow candidates and discuss our visions for Colfax. It’s crucial to have diverse perspectives in shaping our town’s future,” said Schmick.
In the upcoming local elections, Republican incumbent Mary Dye will run for the state house seat against Democrat Patrick Miller from Cheney. Meanwhile, longtime Washington State Senator Mark Schoesler has secured re-election as no other candidates filed for the seat.
In addition, a Democratic candidate from Pullman has joined ten other contenders in the race for the open local congressional seat.
Bobbi Bennett-Wolcott is among five Democrats competing in the primary, while six Republicans, including Pullman native Michael Baumgartner, are vying for the seat currently held by retiring Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers. All eleven candidates will compete in the August primary, with the top two advancing to the November elections.
Whitman County Commissioners Republican Art Swannack and Independent Tom Handy have been re-elected as no other candidates filed for their positions.
The Whitman County Superior Court Judge race will feature Pullman attorneys Roger Sandberg, Steve Martonick, and Jenna Brozik. They will participate in the August primary, with the top two contenders advancing to the November elections. The winner will succeed retiring Judge Gary Libey of Colfax.
