4-year-old life flighted after hit by vehicle

GARFIELD — A four-year-old child was transported via Life Flight after sustaining serious injuries following a hit from a neighbor's vehicle.

Reports say Whitman County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched at approximately 8:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, to an injury accident on Union Street involving a four-year-old.

Reports say deputies determined a homeowner was attempting to back their vehicle into their driveway from Union Street, and a 4-year-old child, who lived next door, was riding a bicycle on the sidewalk near the driveway entrance. While backing up, the child was struck by the vehicle, causing serious injuries.

Life Flight transported the child to an area hospital for treatment and injuries, which currently do not appear to be life-threatening at this time.

The incident is currently under investigation. Sheriff Myers reports that there was no indication that the driver was under the influence or at fault for vehicle control.

"Nothing right now indicates that it is a criminal case," he said, "It was an accident. There was no indication he was under the influence or could even see the child."
