Neighborhood medical clinics

Series: Puerto Penasco | Story 9

While in Peñasco, our group orchestrated two days of neighborhood clinics setup in a local church, proving our home visits days prior worthwhile.

During the clinics, those in need of medical attention were able to get services quicker than they would normally through the public medical system. Our team of EMTs worked with local physician and former Director of Municipal Heath Dr. Eliel Lopez Uriel.

Those needing to be seen would be greeted and called over to the EMT groups individually or by family, for a medical evaluation including checking vitals like blood pressure, glucose levels, respiration, temperature and more. Our group EMTs would gather the information, including information on current medical conditions or ailments, and streamline the process for Dr. Lopez Uriel to discuss further needs of the patient and prescribe medications if necessary.

The clinic was supplied with basic necessities and medications (both donated and purchased) that the locals might not be able to afford or acquire. Tables with medications like vitamins, lice medication, antibiotics, pain relievers, cough suppressants, anti-parasitics, creams and more were co-opted with tables of day-to-day needs. Supplies like shampoo, toothpaste, soap, reading glasses, kids' toys and books were all graciously taken by the end of the second day of clinics.

Dozens of children, women and elders were seen over the course of the clinics. Including several extremely ill children and elderly that needed further treatment.
