Viking girls upset Wildcats at home on senior night

Give themselves a shot at districts with win

PALOUSE - On a festive night filled with excitement and basketball, the Garfield-Palouse Vikings girls basketball team pulled off an upset against their Whitman County foe, Colton Wildcats.

The game was played on Friday, Jan. 26, and was senior night for both the Vikings girls and boys athletes.

For the girls, their senior, Zoe Laughary, was recognized.

"Zoe has been a tremendous leader for us. She played a role on our third place team a couple years ago so she knows what it takes as far as attitude and effort each and every day in practice. She does a great job of making sure everyone is focused in practice. She has also just been a great leader/role model both on and off the court for our team," said Vikings head coach Garrett Parrish.

Colton Pfaff was the senior recognized for the Vikings boys team.

"Colton is one of the good ole boys. He comes into practice everyday, works hard and never complains about the workload. He may be tired or hurt, but he will never bring it up. He definitely is a lead-by-example type of athlete who you hope your younger athletes are watching and learning from," said Vikings boys head coach Nate Holbrook.

Garfield-Palouse girls came out firing early, and set the tone for the rest of the game.

They were on a three-game winning streak heading into senior night, and have since extended their streak to five games.

The game against Colton came just over two weeks since the Wildcats and Vikings met previously, where Colton was victorious 46-38. This time around, the Vikings evened the score, winning 59-44.

The Vikings boys team suffered the same fate as the girls, routing the Wildcats 73-36.

Pfaff scored nine points on his senior night, but Macent Rardon led the way with 16 points.
