Bulldog girls dominate districts, hold 10-0 record

Four games left in regular season play

COLFAX - After a somewhat shaky start to the 2023-24 winter sports season, the defending undefeated 2B state champion Colfax girls basketball team reached 10 district wins without a loss in the current season, sitting comfortably first in the district with four games to go before playoffs.

The two teams threatening Colfax from winning the regular season district championship are Reardan and Davenport.

The game against the Davenport Gorillas took place on Friday, Jan. 19, in Colfax.

The Bulldogs defeated Reardan earlier this season, giving them a 6-1 district record, and defeated Davenport this week, putting their district record at 6-2. Both the Reardan Screaming Eagles and Davenport Gorillas played on Tuesday, Jan. 23, with the game taking place during print.

The Bulldogs played two games this week, winning both comfortably. First, they defeated Davenport 58-38, then routed Kettle Falls 75-28.

The Bulldogs struggled early, with the team down by four at the end of the first quarter. Colfax would rally, however, scoring 23 points in the second quarter to kick start their 20-point victory.

The first quarter saw the Bulldogs struggle offensively, scoring seven points, with five coming from Brenna Gilchrist. The Gorillas would score 11 to lead by four heading into the second quarter.

Brynn McGaughy and the Bulldogs came alive in the second quarter as she scored seven to lead Colfax's 23-point onslaught. The Gorillas would score just three points in the quarter as Colfax took a 30-14 halftime lead.

Coming out of the break, the Gorillas would beat the Bulldogs 15-14 in the third quarter to cut the Colfax lead by one, however, the Gorillas scored just nine points in the fourth as Colfax scored 14 to win.

McGaughy would finish with 20 points and 12 rebounds for yet another double-double. Gilchrist had 10 points and three rebounds with three assists and five steals. Ava Swan was the other double-digit scorer for Colfax with 10.

"We are continually getting better at the little things that will be a difference in the post season," said Bulldogs head coach Jordan Holmes.

After the game against the Gorillas, Colfax traveled to take on the Kettle Falls Bulldogs.

Colfax would win the battle of the Bulldogs, with the game taking place on Saturday, Jan. 20, in Kettle Falls.

Colfax scored 41 points in the first half, while Kettle Falls scored 29 in the game as Colfax earned the 46-point victory.

Kettle Falls started the game with a six-point first quarter while Colfax dropped 21, nine of which came from McGaughy.

During the second quarter, Colfax scored 20 points, with Hailey Demler leading the way with seven. Kettle Falls scored just five points in the second. Colfax would lead 41-11 at halftime.

The highest scoring quarter for Kettle Falls came in the third, where they scored 11. Demler scored six more in the third to propel Colfax.

Colfax scored 17 points in both the third and fourth quarters to win 75-29.

Demler led the way on the offensive end for Colfax sinking 18 points and five rebounds with four assists.

McGaughy had 13 points, five rebounds and four steals in three quarters of action. Gilchrist had 11 points and four rebounds, and Lauryn York and Cianna Gibb scored eight and seven points, respectively.

"The team is focusing on our defense, rebounding, and free throws in practice. This is a fun time of year, when you start to perfect and tweak the offensive sets that you've run all year, and focus on teaching them how to understand and execute the scouting report before each game," said Holmes.

The next game for Colfax will be played on Thursday, Jan. 25, against the Liberty (Spangle) Lancers. The game will take place in Colfax, and is set to tip-off at 6 p.m.

Liberty are 6-2 on the season in district play, and lost to Colfax earlier this season by six points.
