Colfax Bulldog boys and girls programs stand alone

Both teams are undefeated in 2B district play

COLFAX — With seven games left in the regular season of winter sport play, the Colfax Bulldogs boys and girls basketball programs are in prime shape to capture district championships.

Both programs took on the Reardan Screaming Eagles, with the games taking place on Friday, Jan. 12, with the game taking place in Colfax.

The Bulldog girls dominated the Screaming Eagles to capture the 53-29 victory. The girls are riding a six-game winning streak, and have won nine of their last 10 games. The last loss for the Bulldog girls was on Thursday, Jan. 21, to Lakeside (9 mile).

During the game Friday, Jan. 12, Colfax held Reardan to eight points or less in each of the four quarters in the game.

Coming into the game, the Bulldogs and Screaming Eagles were tied for first in district play with an undefeated district record.

The first quarter was a 15-7 advantage for Colfax. Brynn McGaughy had eight points, four rebounds and a block in the first eight minutes of the game. Hailey Demler added five points and three rebounds.

During the second quarter the Bulldogs scored 12 points, however, they held the Screaming Eagles to six points. McGaughy had seven points and three rebounds as Colfax took a 27-13 lead into halftime.

After the break, the Screaming Eagles would score eight points in the third quarter, their highest scoring quarter in the game so far. Colfax would score just 11, led by five from Demler to take a 17-point lead into the fourth.

In the final quarter, the Bulldogs would match their first quarter with 15 points. Demler and McGaughy both had six in the quarter. Colfax held Reardan to eight points in the fourth quarter as well to take the 24-point victory.

McGaughy finished the game with a 22 point, 11 rebound double-double. Demler finished with 17 points and seven rebounds with three steals and assists. Demler and McGaughy scored 39 of the Bulldogs 53 points, out-scoring Reardan by themselves.

Brenna Gilchrist finished with just two points for the Bulldogs, but had nine rebounds, eight assists, and two steals. She has been extremely effective as the Bulldogs point guard and facilitator throughout the season.

On the boys side, the team routed the Screaming Eagles to stay perfect on the year after their 80-53 victory.

Adrik Jenkin led the way for the Bulldogs with 25 points and five rebounds. Seth Lustig had 16 points, four rebounds and steals, and eight assists.

The Bulldogs scored 20 or more points in the first three quarters to help secure the 27-point victory.

With the win, the Bulldogs are the only undefeated team left in district play. Last week, the Bulldogs and St. George’s Dragons were undefeated. Colfax defeated the Dragons last week, and the Dragons lost their next game to Northwest Christian.

The 80 points scored by Colfax in the game was their third time this season scoring 80. The other two times the Bulldogs scored 81 points. Their lowest scoring game this season was 49.

Wigen, Lustig, Jayce Kelly, and Jenkin are all key to the Bulldogs success. Lustig starts the offense from the point guard position, and Kelly and Jenkin are ready to cath-and-shoot, or drive and kick the ball to a shooter. Wigen is active on the rebounding end, and is ready to catch a dump pass for easy baskets.

The next game for both teams will be Friday, Jan. 19, when the Davenport Gorillas come to town. The game will be played in Colfax, with the girls game tipping off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

The Gorilla girls team is 5-1 in district play, and the boys are 3-6.
