Bulldogs bring home victories from Connell, Warden

Grace Jones finishes third at Connell invite

COLFAX — The Colfax wrestling season is nearing its halfway point of the season, and lone Bulldog girl wrestler Grace Jones is thriving.

Jones took third place in the Connell Invitational meet, which took place Friday, Jan. 5, in Connell.

During the meet, Jones placed third, improving her overall record to 17-5. She scored 18 team points for Colfax in the meet.

Jones received a bye in her first match before winning by fall in 1:49 against Betzy Gomez Sosa of Grandview.

Leyna Lagunas of Connell would defeat Jones by decision in the next round, 9-7.

In the consolation semifinal match, Jones would win by forfeit against Kaydin McDonald of Selah, 9-9.

The third place match saw Jones win by decision against Lillyanna Diaz of Wapato, 12-6.

The next time Jones will compete will be Tuesday, Jan. 16. She will participate in a girls wrestling meet held in Deer Park.

The Bulldogs brought 10 boy wrestlers and one Garfield-Palouse wrestler competed in the Jeremiah Schmunk invitational meet, which took place Saturday, Jan. 6, in Warden.

The highest finisher for the Bulldogs was Cooper Phillips, who finished fourth in the 126 pound division.

Viking wrestler Walker Montgomery scored seven team points in the meet in the 132 pound division.

Ty Scott wrestled for the Bulldogs in the 106 pound division, placing fifth, and scoring five team points along the way. He started his day with a bye before falling in 3:22 to Conner Gilbert of Othello.

After the loss, Scott would receive two byes before losing by decision in the consolation semifinal round to Alex Mazon of Kittitas, 10-4.

Scott would defeat Blaze Tillman of Tonasket by decision in his last match to take fifth, 16-9.

For the 113 pound division, Cameron Mathia scored three team points for Colfax.

He received a bye in the first round before losing by fall in 2:19 to Luis Verduzco of Tonasket.

Mathia would win by fall against Ben Richey of Tonasket in :57 before losing by major decision to Omar Gonzalez of Kiona Benton in the consolation round three, 11-0.

Cody Phillips placed fifth for the Bulldogs in the 120 pound division, scoring 11 team points.

He started with a victory by fall over Noah Everett of Davenport, then won by decision over Jon Brooks of Columbia Burbank in the quarterfinal match, 5-3.

In the semifinal, Phillips lost by decision to Jose Arriaga of Warden, 10-6.

Phillips would lose in the consolation semifinal match by tech fall against Beau Wentzel of St. Maries before defeating Emmanuel Ayala Jr. of Othello by sudden victory.

For the 126 pound division, Cooper Phillips placed fourth and scored 16 team points for the Bulldogs.

Cooper received a bye in the first round, then won by fall in 1:32 against Michael Stewart Sr. of St. Maries.

In the semifinal round, Kevin Polito of Tonasket bested Cooper, defeating the Bulldog by fall in 4:57.

Cooper would defeat Manny Canales of Warden by fall in 3:34 in the consolation semifinal match.

In the third place match, Cooper lost by fall in 3:40 against Michael Gonzalez of Warden.

Dillon Gassenberg scored seven team points for the Bulldogs in the 132 pound division.

Gassenberg won by fall in 2:00 against Keegan Brigham of Southridge in his opening round, then lost by fall in 1:23 to Aaron Polito of Tonasket.

During the consolation round two match, Gassenberg would win by fall over Bryan Zaragoza of Warden in :52. He would lose by fall in :45 to Marcos Zuniga of Othello in the consolation round three match.

Alton Burt scored four points for Colfax in the 144 pound division. He won by fall against Thorne Tissue of Liberty (Spangle) in 3:30 during his opening round match.

Burt would then lose by tech fall against Junior Santiago of Warden in 2:46.

After the loss, Burt would receive a bye before losing by fall in 3:59 to Jesse Humpherys of Moses Lake.

Austin Campbell wrestled for Colfax in the 157 pound division. He lost by fall in 1:56 to Tayven Bingham of Southridge in his opening round match.

Campbell received a bye in his next round, then lost by fall in 1:33 to Kelton Allman of St. Maries in the consolation round two.

Also in the 157 pound division for the Bulldogs was Joel Burris, who lost by fall in 1:26 in his opening round match to Wyatt Cole of Moses Lake.

Burris received a bye in his next round, he then lost by fall in :39 to Brody Stewart of Kittias.

Steven Campbell scored three team points for the Bulldogs in the 190 pound division.

Campbell lost by fall in :56 to Trey Gibson of St. Maries to start his day. He then won by fall in 1:24 against Angel Gonzalez of Mabton.

Campbell lost in the consolation round two in 2:11 to Jayton Caddy of Tonasket.

In the 285 pound division, Tristen Burd started his round with a bye, then lost by fall in 1:11 to Josue Espindola of Othello.

Burd received another bye before losing by fall in 3:53 to Landon Los of River View.

For the Vikings, Walker Montgomery scored seven team points in the 132 pound division.

His day started with a victory by fall in 1:04 against Marcos Zuniga of Othello, then lost by fall in :51 to Trenton Vazquez of Moses Lake.

The consolation round two was a victory by fall for Montgomery, he took down Kaleb Priest of Southridge in 2:03.

His final match was a loss by fall in :36 to Landon Tweedy of St. Maries.

The next meet for the Bulldog boys wrestling team will be Thursday, Jan. 11, with the meet taking place in Northwest Christian. The meet is set to start at 4 p.m.
