Colfax Bulldog wrestler takes gold in Pomeroy meet

COLFAX — The Colfax wrestling team traveled to Pomeroy to compete in the Christmas Tournament 2023.

One Bulldog wrestler took first in his weight class, and three more took bronze in Pomeroy.

The Pomeroy wrestling meet took place on Saturday, Dec. 30.

Cooper Phillips took first in boys 126 pounds and Ty Scott of Colfax took third at 106 pounds.

Dillon Gassenberg took third in boys 132 pounds and Isaac Nelson of Colfax took third in boys 190 pounds.

The teams competing in the meet were: Colfax, Potlatch, White Swan, Enterprise, Lind-Ritzville, Clarkston, River View, Union, Joseph, Grangeville, Asotin, and Waitsburg.

At the conclusion of the meet, Enterprise came out on top with 211.5 team points. Lind-Ritzville took second with 130, and Colfax finished third with 115.5 team points.

“Issac Pinned Giovanni Aquaro from Potlatch, for us to finish a half a point ahead of Potlatch for 3rd. Proud of all the kids for competing their best at Pomeroy,” said Colfax head coach Casey Jones.

Boys Results

Wrestling at 106 pounds, Ty Scott took third place for Colfax, scoring 16.5 team points.

Ty Scott opened with a bye, before taking down Karson Hatch of Potlatch in 1:40. He would fall in the next round in 0:18 to Uriel Lopez of White Swan before defeating Adam Brown of White Swan by technical fall.

The third place match saw Scott win by major decision over Barrett Bronson of Enterprise, 19-9.

In the 113 pounds category, Cameron Mathia of Colfax placed fourth overall with 14 team points scored.

His opening round match was a bye followed by a victory by fall over Austin Bettencourt of Potlatch in 1:22.

Mathia fell in his semifinal match against Octavio Paredes Martinez of Lind-Ritzville in 2:48, then fell in the third-place match against Arturo Espindola of White Swan in 4:49 to take fourth in his class.

Cody Phillips of Colfax took fourth in the 120 pound weight class, scoring 14 team points.

Cody opened with a decision loss against Waylon Rosman of Lind-Ritzville, 17-15.

He then would receive a bye before winning by fall over Cooper Rushing of Lind-Ritzville in 0:23.

Cody would win by fall over Vicente Farias of River View in 0:21 before pinning Caleb Laprath of Potlatch in 3:27 to reach the third-fourth place match.

In the match Cody would fall in 1:10 against Axel Castro of White Swan to take fourth.

For the 126 pound class, Cooper Phillips finished first overall for Colfax with 24 team points.

Cooper opened his tournament with two straight byes before pinning Vallen Redman of River View in 1:34 to reach the championship match.

In the match Cooper won by fall in 0:32 against Dustin Eguires of White Swan to receive his first place finish.

Wrestling at 132 pounds was Dillon Gassenberg of Colfax, who finished third overall with 18 team points.

Gassenberg opened his match in Pomeroy with a bye before winning by fall over Nathan Crago of Union in 2:38.

Gassenberg would fall in the semifinal match in 2:37 against Gunner Sinclair of Enterprise before taking third after pinning Jayden McNall of Joseph in 0:35.

Austin Campbell wrestled for Colfax in the 150 pound division. He started his day with a defeat by fall in 1:21 to Carson Kubik of Lind-Ritzville. Campbell would receive a bye before losing by fall in 1:26 against Jaquan James of White Swan in the second consolation round match.

At 174 pounds, Steven Campbell scored four points for Colfax.

After a first round bye, Steven was defeated by fall in 2:36 against Koyen Fortune of Waitsburg.

After a bye, Steven won by fall against Logan Posey of Potlatch in 0:23.

Steven was defeated in the consolation semifinal round by fall in 0:27 against Byron Collier of Dayton.

Isaac Nelson finished third for Colfax and scored 16 team points in the 190 pound division.

Nelson received a bye in the first round before winning by fall in 10:12 over Gabe McKaig of Union. Nelson then was pinned in 1:11 by Parker Farmer of Grangeville before winning by decision over Grant Stevens of Clarkston, 6-0, advancing Nelson to the third-fourth place match.

In the match, Nelson won by fall in 1:17 over Giovanni Aquaro of Potlatch.

Tristen Burd scored 10 team points for Colfax in the 285 pound division.

He started his day with a win by fall over Malachi Lewis of Asotin in 0:47.

Cade Cunningham of Enterprise defeated Burd by fall in 0:59.

In the second round of the consolation bracket, Burd won by fall in 0:14 over Carter Pease of River View.

Burd would defeat Malachi Jaynes of Turner by fall in 0:49 before losing by fall to Justyn Watters of Clarkston in 1:33.
