Two Colfax boys bring home medals from Tri-County

Bulldogs struggle at Tri-County Classic

SPOKANE VALLEY – Two Colfax boys brought home medals from the Tri-County Classic on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Isaac Nelson led the Bulldogs with a fifth place medal at 190 pounds. The other medalist, Cody Phillips, finished sixth at 126.

As a team, the Bulldogs scored 31 points and finished 18th out of 20 teams competing in the tournament at Central Valley High School.

Nelson's 190-pound medal run began with an opening-match pin of Ethan Reid of Northwest Christian (Colbert) in 20 seconds.

He received a bye in the second round and then pinned teammate Steven Campbell of Colfax in the quarterfinals in 48 seconds.

His first loss came in the semifinals, when Brayden Burgener of Shadle Park pinned Nelson in 31 seconds, sending the Bulldog to the consolation rounds.

In his first consolation bought, Nelson was then pinned by Sterling McLaughlin of Reardan in 38 seconds.

Nelson won his final bout – the match for sixth place – by pinning Ezra Greenup of Mead in 1:03.

At 126, Phillips opened with a bye and then pinned Moshtaq Janati of Central Valley in 1:42 and Jet Shee of Lewis and Clark in 1:29 to reach the semifinals.

In the semifinal match, Phillips lost by technical fall (17-2 in 3:43) to Sam Drake of Kettle Falls.

In the next consolation round, Nathan Kstecka of Lewis and Clark pinned Phillips in 3:47.

Then, in the match for fifth place, Liam Horn of Medical Lake pinned Phillips in 1:28; Phillips finished sixth.

In other Colfax matches:

106 pounds – Ty Scott opened with a bye and then was pinned by Alex Kurakin of Cheney in 3:36. Scott then won a 7-4 decision over Micah Rocha of Northwest Christian, before being pinned by Xander Karatzas of Central Valley in 2:19.

126 pounds – Cooper Phillips opened with a loss by pin to Liam Horn of Medical Lake in 3:26. He then received two byes before losing a 4-2 decision to Ephrem Smith of Mead .

132 pounds – Dillon Gassenberg lost his opening bout by pin to Kouki Van Hoose of Ferris (time not reported). Gassenberg then won a 15-6 major decision over Ayden Ackerly of Central Valley. Gassenberg was eliminated from the tournament by Lincoln Kuttner of Shadle Park, who won an 11-5 decision over the Bulldog.

144 pounds – Wyatt Southern lost his opening match by pin to Praithan Borja of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) in 2:29. Southern then received a bye before pinning Brody Leach of Ridgeline in 44 seconds. Southern was eliminated by Lincoln Wright of Freeman, who won by pin in 2:49.

144 pounds – Alton Burt won his opening match, pinning Luke Hemingway of Ridgeline in 2:04. In his second match, Burt lost a 15-3 major decision to Evan Urann of Mead. In the consolation round, Burt received a bye and then pinned Brendan Simmons of Mead in 24 seconds. He was eliminated by Praithan Borja of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), who won by pin in 2:46.

150 pounds – Austin Campbell lost his opening matches, first by pin to Bradley Rowland of East Valley (Spokane Valley) in 46 seconds and then by pin to Logan Buffalo of Jenkins (Chewelah) in 42 seconds.

190 pounds – Steven Campbell opened his tournament with a pin over Zephaniah Miller of Mount Spokane in 57 seconds. He then pinned Benji Ikelang of Central Valley in 1:23. In the quarterfinals, he was pinned by teammate Issac Nelson in 48 seconds. He was eliminated by Lincoln Koyama of Ferris, who won by pin in 1:04.

285 pounds – Tristen Burd received an opening round bye, and then was pinned by Aidan Patterson of Lewis and Clark in 1:47 in the quarterfinals. He was eliminated by David Greenwood of East Valley (Spokane Valley), who pinned him in 41 seconds.
