PALOUSE - Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers spoke to a Garfield-Palouse senior government class taught by John Gehring on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at the high school.
Rodgers met with Principal Sandra Kraus-Ayers, and Superintendent Mike Jones to tour the school and see some of the programs offered.
Gehring said McMorris Rodgers then met with the senior class, took some questions, and shared her story of coming from small town Kettle Falls to the state house, and then onto Congress.
After meeting with the government class, Rodgers then spoke to the entire high school about her experiences in Congress and what America means to her.
Gehring said she spoke on being Chair of the House of Energy and Commerce Committee, and about her priorities as a representative, including themes around getting America energy independent and expanding energy production.
Rodgers spoke on how important it is for young people to be involved and responsible citizens, so that America can remain true to the principles it was founded on.
Gehring said that while Rodgers was heading to meet with local leaders after her visit with the students, her primary purpose coming through the area was due to the invite from the government class.
"It was an absolute thrill for us as a school, and especially for the senior class, who bombarded her with selfies afterwards," Gehring said.
