Nighthawk girls soar and fall in week two action

Suffered first loss of the season in week two

OAKESDALE - The Oakesdale Nighthawks girls basketball team fell in their second game in week two to give them their first loss on the season.

Fortunately for Oakesdale, they won their first conference match up of the season the day prior to stay perfect in conference play.

The Nighthawks currently hold a record of 3-1.

Their conference victory came against the Garfield-Palouse Vikings. The game was played in Oakesdale. and took place on Friday, Dec. 8.

The Nighthawks jumped on the Vikings early, and slowly let the Vikings back into the game, however, they would hold firm in the fourth quarter, earning the 38-36 victory.

The first quarter saw Oakesdale lead 10-3 at the end of the quarter. The Nighthawks did not let the Vikings score until just over a minute left in the first quarter, a three-point shot.

In the second quarter the Nighthawks would score eight points in five minutes before the Vikings scored in the second. Oakesdale took a 22-9 lead into halftime.

The scoring would flip in the third quarter. Oakesdale would score just four points in the quarter, giving up 14 to Garfield-Palouse to cut the lead to 26-23.

The fourth quarter was back-and-forth the entire quarter. The game was tied at 33 each with two minutes left.

Payton Davis would score four points in 20 seconds late to give the Nighthawks the five-point lead.

The Vikings scored three more points in the late stages, but could not stop Oakesdale, seeing the Nighthawks win 38-36.

In the game, sophomore Bradyn Henley led the way with 17 points. She went 5/14 from the field including two three-point shots. She also had one assist and two rebounds.

Davis had 13 points in the game on 4/9 shooting including one three-point shot. Davis would have 10 rebounds, giving her a double-double in the game.

The Nighthawks let the Vikings come back in the game off the 22 turnovers Oakesdale had. The team will look to clean up the turnovers heading into conference play.

The next game for the Nighthawks will be played Friday, Dec. 15. The Nighthawks will head to Pomeroy to take on the Pirates. The girls game is set to tip-off at 6:30 p.m.

Following the girls game will be the boys game.
