Colfax Bulldogs girls struggle, lose two games

Suffered two early losses in 2023, undefeated in 2022.

COLFAX - The Colfax Bulldogs girls basketball team looked to bounce back after a slow start to the season in the eyes on Colfax girls basketball team.

After winning all 28 games the team played last season, they have already lost three basketball games in the first two weeks of the season.

The Bulldogs ended their first week of the 2023-24 season 1-1 with a win against Freeman and a loss against Warden.

The next two games for the Bulldogs were against Clarkston and Mabton.

The game against Clarkston was played in Colfax on Thursday, Dec. 8.

The Bulldogs would fall behind early, scoring just three points in the first quarter as Colfax would lose the game 45-59.

The Clarkston Bantams took a 19-3 lead into the second quarter of play.

Colfax would outscore Clarkston 15-13 in the second quarter, but trailed 32-18 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Brynn McGaughy would score nine points in the third quarter as she attempted to rally the Bulldogs to make a comeback. The Bulldogs would trail 33-45 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter, Colfax would cut the lead to 10 early, but could not get any closer.

The Bantams would lead 56-42 before eventually taking the 59-45 victory.

McGaughy would finish with 17 points, but grabbed 19 rebounds for the Bulldogs. She went 7/21 shooting from two-point shots.

Hailey Demler would have 10 points and eight rebounds for Colfax, and Brenna Gilchrist had four points.

The Bulldogs then played their second game of the week against the Mabton Vikings.

The game was played on Friday, Dec. 8.

Colfax and Mabton were fairly even through three quarters, the game fell from the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter as the team scored just six points while the Vikings scored 14 to take the 52-36 victory.

The first quarter saw Colfax trail by just three, then would head into the locker room down by five.

The Bulldogs would struggle to close out the second half, they would score less than ten points in both the third and fourth quarters as the Vikings were consistent throughout the game, wining by 16.

McGaughy had yet another double-double for Colfax. She had 11 points and 13 rebounds in the game.

The high scorer in the game for Colfax was Hailey Demler. She finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Bulldogs only had five girls score in the game, where three of the five scorers combined for seven points.

The Bulldogs will look to get back tow winning ways in week three of action. The Bulldogs will play Friday, Dec. 15, a home game against the Asotin Panthers. The girls game is set to start at 6 p.m.

McGaughy and Demler have been the scorers for Colfax, they need production from others if they want to get back to winning ways, and defend their 2022-23 state basketball championship from the team last season, who went undefeated.
