'Oklahoma!' to hit the stage in Colfax

Musical’s opening performance on Nov. 16

COLFAX — This year’s Colfax High School Fall Musical is ‘Oklahoma!’ and runs next week starting Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Showtimes after opening night are Friday, Nov. 17, through Monday, Nov. 20, with all show times at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 9 a.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 9:30 a.m. with limited seating.

Director Cary Cammack said that the choice of ‘Oklahoma!’ this year was to recruit boys to join the musical. He noted that the musical was Roger and Hammerstein’s first big show to put them on the Broadway stage.

“We have a young cast,” Cammack said, noting that there are only about 28 of them in the show, all Junior High and High School students, with about ten students returning.

Cammack said that with a young cast, many of the students are new to the stage, “They’ve been working hard on putting it together,” he said, noting that they’re having a lot of fun with it.

Cammack said Janni Burt is doing the costumes, “The boys are enjoying wearing jeans and boots, and the girls are all dressed up,” he said.

Several other people involved in the play are Stage Manager and Assistant Director Michael Potesky, Kelley Jones doing publicity, Bridgett Morgan collecting props, Adam Kroll in sound, Ryan Perez lights and Jeremy Inman doing the sets. Beverly Barnett has done the set painting.

Cammack said that the musical is a comedy, “I think that’s one of the things the kids have enjoyed about it.”

The kids have also been able to learn square dancing, Cammack said. “Even though they’re young, they’ve been very willing.”

Cammack said that rehearsals for this year’s musical started in the second week of September, so they’ve been rehearsing for a couple of months. “It’s a very energetic and fun show.”
