WSU student arrested with weapon

PULLMAN –– Nineteen-year-old Taylor Asante was arrested and booked into the Whitman County Jail on Sunday, October 1st, for Felony Harassment and Weapons Capable related charges.

The Pullman Police Department responded to a disorderly conduct report at 2:26 a.m. on Sunday at 1355 SE Olympia Ave, Rogers Hall.

Brady Gasseling, 18, reportedly told the responding Pullman Officer, Brandon Cochran, that a male ran past his room screaming he was “strapped with a gun” and was yelling, “Come back here.”

“When I arrived at the front of Rogers Hall, several people were running out of the front of the building yelling about almost being killed by someone with a knife,” said Cochran.

Reports say that Gasseling, Erick J. Santiago, 18, and Dylan Hawkings, 19, identified Asante. “Gasseling, Santiago, and Hawkings appeared to be scared and believed that Asante had almost killed them and was going to kill them,” reported Cochran.

Reports say that Asante fled the dormitory but was later located at a secondary dorm room at #80 McEachern Hall, roughly 100 yards up from Rogers Hall.

Officers identified Asante based on the descriptions provided by Gasseling, Santiago, and Hawkings.

“After being read the Ferrier warnings, Asante consented to the search of his room where a kitchen knife was found. Asante was taken into custody,” said Cochran.

Reports say Gasseling, Santiago, and Hawkings provided statements to Cochran stating they heard someone begin yelling, running down the hall, and banging on their doors. Gasseling stated he looked through the peephole on his door and saw Asante.

Gasseling, Santiago, and Hawkings reportedly looked out their door when the yelling stopped and went to check on their friend, Jayden Calusnitzer, 19, who was in a different dorm.

“When they got to the elevator, the elevator door opened, and Asante was standing inside. Gasseling, Santiago, and Hawkings stated that Asante pulled a silver kitchen knife out of an orange sheath and chased after them. Gasseling, Santiago, and Hawkings ran down the stairs from the third floor and out the front entrance of Rogers Hall.” said Cochran. “This is when I arrived on the scene.”

Reports say Asante admitted to going back into Rogers Hall and was arrested with the help of the witness statements.
