Commissioners discuss hotdogs and damaged building

Damage on WHITCOM building only cosmetic

COLFAX — Whitman County Commissioners met in a workshop on Monday, August 14, to discuss various agenda items.

The meeting opened with Gary Russo, a local Zips Employee, hoping to open a hotdog stand outside the Whitman County Courthouse along the sidewalk.

“I was thinking about starting up a hotdog stand. I just came here today to put input in, and I am trying to get permission before. I will get all the prints I need to get, and I will present my case on a different day,” said Russo. “Everybody’s gotta eat. I was hoping to see if I could open up in front of the courthouse or jail.”

District 2 County Commissioner Tom Handy expressed interest in a hotdog stand and found no fundamental issues.

In concluding the meeting, Handy reported an incident at the WHITCOM building in Pullman.

“A couple of months ago, one of the Pullman disposal trucks bumped into the WHITCOM building and damaged it,” he said.

He reported the damage to appear to be primarily cosmetic and stated that the vehicle driver did not want to go through insurance after the crash.

“Everybody kind of forgot about it, and this just surfaced again,” he said.

As a result, Handy suggested that after locating a contractor to restore the building to its pre-damaged condition, the commission can bill Pullman Disposal for the costs.
