Northwest Barrel Horse Association races in Colfax

On Sunday, August 6, the Palouse Empire Fairground lit up once again as another barrel racing event took place in Colfax.

This event was a jackpot barrel racing event through the Northwest Barrel Horse Association (NWBHA) District 3 season.

"We are a registered non-profit organization that welcomes contestants of all competition levels," said Cheyenne Gaspar, NWBHA District 3 Director. Gaspar would also compete in the racing events on the day, taking sixth in the Open race 1 4D placings.

The event started with open time only practice runs for an hour before the real racing began. At 11 a.m., the racing began with the PeeWee races, then was quickly followed by the open class racing.

There were over 100 riders and racers at the event Sunday, from PeeWee races to open races to the senior events, there was fun barrel racing all day long.

From the NWBHA District 03 Facebook, "We cannot thank each and every volunteer enough for the success of our double header in Colfax today. With the number of entries we had in Open Race 1, we were able to add $200, and in Open Race 2 we were able to add $175."

In PeeWee race 1, Callahan Smith on the horse "Rosie" took first place, winning $13. Hazel Erickson won $11 thanks to horse "Smug", and Owen Palmer rode "Gearing Up" to a $8 third place.

In the Open Race 1, 1D Placings, top-prize $139 was awarded to Rachelle Riggers on her horse "Mighty Flight Ta Fame" as she raced around the course in 18 seconds. Laramie Richardson on "CalibsFinalBid" (Boldy) took home $105 for second place, and $75 was given to Holly May and horse "Kicken Cans" for third place.

In 2D, $123 went to Carol Jones and "Dods A Queen" for first place. $93 went to horse "Jay Docs Dreamer" (Dodge) and rider Rowdie Jo Broeckel for second place, and Lacey Smith took third place with her horse "Pecos Bill".

3D placings saw $107 go to first-place winner Melissa Simpson on her horse "Docs French Boots", they ran a time of 19.246 seconds. Second place and $81 went to Kim Hagestad and horse "Knute". $58 was awarded to Amy Palmer and her horse "Westin French Watch."

For 4D placings, 19.710 was the top time in the group, ran by Sienna Swift on horse "Houdini" to win $91. Second place went to Jaycee Van Buren and horse "Twenty" for $69. Twenty was not done on the day, the horse also took third in the 4D placings, the rider this time was Brandi Van Buren for another $49. Brandi would also take first in the Punchy Pony Race 1, and 1D placing, winning herself another $44.

5D saw 20.315 seconds and a first-place prize of $75 go to McKenna Besst and horse "Employed By Jeffaray". Second place went to Tess Bowers and horse "Ms Dakota Pep". Third place and $30 went to Hailey Crawford and horse "HG Sambasco To The Max".

For the youth race, Piper Cox took home $55 in the 1D placing after racing 18.386 seconds. In 2D, Libby Lyle took home $49 with a run of 19.016 seconds. $42 went to 3D winner Piper Cox, and $36 went to first-place winner Jocelyn Keck in the 4D placings.

For the senior race, Kelly Longfellow and horse "Xtremes Last Dash" took first in the 1D placings and won $71. In 2D, $64 went to Kim Magan and horse "Dashers Punk (Bird). 3D saw Amber Dahlgren and horse "Chivaro" win $55. Amber Gray would then take home the 4D title and $48 thanks to horse "VCR Dash On Toppit."
