MALDEN — Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission Grant Awarded $2,018,261 for improvement of the Palouse to Cascades Trail.
State Parks will use the grant to improve the five mile stretch on the trail between Malden and the historic site known as Kenova. This section of the trail includes three trestles that burned in a 2020 fire.
State Parks will also restore and fireproof the bridge trestles, upgrade the trail surface, reinstate drainage, and develop a trailhead access point across Kenova.
This trail segment will connect to the trailhead being built in Malden, and will provide 14 miles of contiguous trail through Eastern Washington.
The trail is used for non-motorized activities, such as: bicycling, walking, bird watching, and horseback riding.
The Palouse to Cascades Trail is part of the Great American Rail Trail across the United States. The corridor stretches more than 285 miles across the state of Washington.
