15th Annual Zornes Memorial Golf Tournament successful

The Annual Peter Zornes Memorial Golf Tournament, held on July 8, at the Colfax Golf Club, marked one of the largest turnouts in its 15 year history, with 62 registered players.

Golfers of every age and experience level were welcomed from Maple Valley, Wash., Spokane, LaCrosse, Oakesdale, Colfax, Pullman, Moscow, Boise, Kalispell, Mont., Surprise, Ariz., and Vail, Ariz. At check-in, registrants received a Peter Zornes Memorial Tournament shirt and logo golf balls along with other small goodies in their welcome bags. The 18-hole Scramble started at 10 a.m., following a meet and greet time and opportunity to view the many silent auction items donated to the fundraiser from local businesses and artisans. There were several contests available to players during their round of golf. Awards were presented at the conclusion of the dinner.

Champions' hats, and $100 gift cards went to the 2022 Champs, Steve Larkin, Jim Newby, Mary Newby and Matt Scholz who shot a combined score of 54 for the 18 holes to defend their title.

Second Place winners were the team of Travis Brown, Julie Brown, Ryan McLaughlin and Mike Varnum whose record during the play (most eagles) served as the tie-breaker with three other teams who also shot a 57 on the day. They each won a $50 gift card for their efforts.

The Putting Contest winner was Mary Newby.

Prizes were also awarded for Long Drive, Closest to Pin, Longest Putt, Longest Marshmallow Drive and "Most Honest Team" (highest team score).

The final event of the day was the $50,000 Cash Shoot-Out where five lucky super-ticket purchasers were drawn to take one shot from 165 yards, to try for a hole-in-one and the big cash prize. All five contestants hit great shots, although no one got it in; but they were all pleased with the consolation prize of special golf socks to commemorate the experience.

Every year a Friend of the Tournament, someone that voluntarily goes above and beyond in making the event shine, is selected. This year's recipient is Tiffani Heitstuman, of Pullman, whose contributions of time and effort were significant additions toward the success of the day.
