Colfax local Brynn McGaughy headlines Spokane Youth Sports Awards

SPOKANE — The Spokane Youth Sports Awards ceremony returned June 20, ending the four-year hiatus.

The event was held at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, celebrating top high school athletes, as well as coaches in the Southwest Washington area.

With the four-year hiatus, the awards organizers changed some of the awards, as well as tweaking and modifying some categories and descriptions of awards.

Awards were broken up by Metro and Regional awards.

McKinzie Turner, Oakesdale volleyball coach, won the Region Coach of The Year award. Turner led the Oakesdale volleyball team to a picture-perfect season, they did not drop a single set all year as they claimed their second straight state title for 1B Volleyball.

The Oakesdale volleyball team, as a whole, also won the award for Region Girls Team of The Year. Oakesdale did not struggle all season, as they won 22 straight games, and 66 straight sets. During the 2021-22 season, the Nighthawks went 24-0 as well. They lost eight sets overall during the 2021-22 season. The Nighthawk volleyball team has not lost a full game outright since the 2019-2020 season, where they lost the state championship game. The Colfax Bulldogs girls basketball team was one-of-three finalists for the award won by Oakesdale volleyball.

The Bulldogs would not go home empty handed, as Brynn McGaughy took home the Region Girls Athlete of The Year. Last season, she led the Bulldogs to an undefeated season, winning the state championship during this season. They finished second in state during the 2021-22 season.

McGaughy averaged over 26 points and 15 rebounds during the state tournament, a truly dominant performance from McGaughy, who recently jumped to the No. 15 nationally ranked recruit for the class of 2025. She also recently picked up an offer from the Indiana Hoosiers, who finished last season ranked as the No. 3 team in the nation, and took a No.1 overall seed into the postseason tournament. Jessie Reed, Oakesdale volleyball, basketball, and track and field, was also a finalist for this award.
