County students visit Washington D.C.

COLFAX - Seventy students from Colfax and Oakesdale had the chance to visit Washington, D.C., having left Thursday, June 8, to explore the nation's capital for five days.

Several parents joined the students, including Curt McNeilly, who explained that the program was through the Colfax Junior/Senior High School.

Colfax High School principal David Gibb stated that the school was presented with the opportunity last year by World Class Trips, a travel agency that arranges educational trips for kids.

McNeilly explained that the education field trip allowed the students to visit multiple sites in the nation's capital, including the World War II Memorial, Washington Monument, White House, Arlington National Cemetery, The Holocaust Museum, and Gettysburg.

Before their departure, McNeilly stated that he and the students were excited about the trip.

"Seeing the nation's capital with the kids, seeing all these important parts of American history, is something I wouldn't want to miss out on," McNeilly said.

Teacher Ronda Penwell stated that a few parents met Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

She added that the trip was educational and fun, with one parent calling it "A trip of a lifetime."

Gibb explained that the students involved did fundraising to make the trip possible, including dinner after the Spring Show.

"I'm excited for the group," Gibb had said, adding that he thinks it's something that can probably happen every other year for a group of students.
