Slippery Gulch set to make a splash

TEKOA — Slippery Gulch is on its 94th year of running, and the festivities begin Friday, June 16.

The event celebrates the town in many ways and includes family and adult-themed events.

A fishing derby for kids 12 and under kicks off the festivities at Hangman Creek. A prize is offered at the end of the derby. Free throw competitions occur on the outdoor basketball courts in the heart of the town on Friday, June 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Tekoa’s swimming pool invites all teenagers to join in on a lock-in event on Friday from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

A weekend-long golf tournament at the Tekoa Golf Course will start on Saturday, June 17.

The event rides through the weekend as breakfast is offered through the Tekoa Chamber of Commerce at the high school from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Tekoa’s annual fun run takes participants uphill from Tekoa High School to the historic Tekoa Trestle. The fun run starts at 8 a.m.

The Milestone Car Club and ATSH Truck Show first appeared at Slippery Gulch in 2022 to show off vintage, refurbished, and classic vehicles. They will return below Tekoa Elementary School’s hill this year from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Local hotspot for freshly brewed coffee and sweet treats, Eclair’s Coffee, will have a food stand by the Softball field and opens at 9 a.m.

It is highly encouraged to try their sweet delectable treats.

It wouldn’t be a festival without a parade or two. Tekoa’s main street — Crosby Street — closes for the local Kiddie Parade, games, and food vendors. Tekoa’s grand parade follows after and features a variety of royalty, organizations, veterans, and more.

Eric and Connie Marsh are this year’s Grand Marshals and will welcome the graduating class of 1973 and Veterans to the events for the day.

Crafts and Bazaar Vendors will open at 9 a.m. at the Tekoa Community Center and remain open until 3 p.m.

Also on the docket brings the much-heralded town-wide Egg Toss.

“Don’t miss out on the world’s largest highway egg toss,” said the Slippery Gulch Social Affairs Coordinator, Joni Hay. “There is true family fun with lots of activities for all ages”

A town-wide egg toss brings over 300 people downtown as egg-silent fun ensues, almost surely covering the town in eggs. The winner of the egg toss wins a grand prize and makes for incredible photo opportunities for photographers near and far.

FCCLA hosts a lunch by the softball field from noon until 5 p.m. A bike challenge course will start at 12:30 p.m. at the outdoor basketball courts. Tekoa’s library will host a community Helpers Fair from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Tekoa Museum will open from 1-5 p.m., as well.

At 2 p.m., Empire Theatres will present a family-friendly film following an introduction to Tekoa History. The free movie set to preview is “Minions.”

As the day wraps up, visitors can watch the 4 p.m. softball game at the field below the elementary school, and adults can attend the Adult Dance at the Event Center from 8 p.m. to midnight. Fireworks are planned for 10 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to join the town-wide fun and participate in the planned events.
