Jennings Elementary first graders meet many animals during the event.

COLFAX - The Colfax FFA Chapter held its first Ag Day for Jennings Elementary students since 2019 Friday, May 26.

FFA Advisor Michael Heitstuman stated that they couldn't do it in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021 the school districts still needed to be at the point they could do it.

"This is our first year bringing it back," Heitstuman said, adding that they didn't do the event last year.

The event started at around 8:30 a.m. this morning, he explained, adding that the first graders were the first to come and then through sixth grade.

Afterward, the kindergartners and pre-k came over in the afternoon.

"As far as animals, we had four rotations total," he said, noting that they had a couple of Palouse Empire steers for the animal petting zoo that will go to the fair in the fall.

Heitstuman added that there was also a horse, a goat, some chicken, and a baby lamb.

"The kids enjoyed it, and they walked out being a little more educated about agriculture," he said, adding that there was also a tractor and a mower that the kids could play on.

Then they came inside the classroom, where we covered beef byproducts," he said.

In the third station, they covered a plant's life cycle, and he explained that this is from the seed to the flowering stage. The kids could plant marigold seeds and got to take home a marigold that they started.

The final station was on dairy.

He explained that kids made ice cream in a bag with ice cubes, rock salt, and a pre-mixture with cream.

"They got to make and eat that on their way out," he said.

Heitstuman explained that the event went well, and they're looking forward to doing it again next year. He stated that they're thankful the elementary teachers brought their kids over to see it and that they could teach them about agriculture.
