Whitman County competitors dominate Junior Livestock show

SPOKANE — Several Whitman County youth livestock ranchers returned as champions from the 88th Annual Junior Livestock of Spokane last Monday, May 15.

Held at the Spokane County Fair and Exposition Center, over 440 youth livestock exhibitors travelled from across the region to show and sell their cattle, hogs, lambs, and goats.

In the swine department, Whitman County was well represented in the final rankings.

Oakesdale FFA member Samantha Holling’s 295 pound pig earned the prize of FFA Overall Market Hog, selling at a price of $9.00 per pound to Tankmax.

Steptoe Canyon 4-H member Cade Wolf’s 280 pound pig earned 4-H Overall Market Hog, selling at a price of $12.50 per pound to Liam Trent. Wolf also earned second place in the Gilt Jackpot and the title of Junior Reserve Champion 4-H Hog Fitting and Showing competition.

Landon Miller, also out of the Steptoe Canyon 4-H chapter, was awarded the Intermediate Grand Champion title in the 4-H Hog Fitting and Showing competition.

In the FFA Hog Fitting and Showing competition, Kyra Holt of St. John-Endicott earned the title of Reserve Champion in the Junior and Senior category. Holt also received a scholarship at the competition.

Delaney Imler of Colfax was awarded a scholarship prize at the competition.

In total, over half a million dollars worth of animals were sold.
